The Inter-American Magnet School, 919 W. Barry Ave., will have a benefit on Friday, April 1, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event is titled Noche Cultural: Latino World Music & Dance Benefit for Inter-American School. The school is located between Clark/Halsted streets and Sheffield Avenue.
Noche Cultural will bring awareness of Latin America's rich and diverse cultural heritage with an evening of music and dance performances, a food fair and children's art activities. The event will also raise much-needed funds for Inter-American public elementary school and honor the retiring principal of 20 years, Eva Helwing.
The lineup includes live entertainment from Machu Pichu (music from the Andes); Afro-Caribbean influenced Jarocho ensemble Tarima Son (Mexico); dance performances by Group Taino (Puerto Rico); and folkloric troupe Tierra Colombiana Dance Company (Colombia).
The event is bilingual, kid-friendly and open to the public. Tickets sold at the door are $5 for adults, $2 for children, free for children under 5. All proceeds will support the school's mission to promote social, cultural and educational diversity and excellence. Limited parking will be available.
Founded in 1975, Inter-American Magnet School is considered a national model of successful bilingual, multicultural education. The school serves over 640 multi-ethnic and economically diverse Pre-K through 8th grade students from all over the city.
