The popularity, power and passion of William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" has inspired more than 60 television and film versions (including the 1968 Franco Zeffirelli film and the 1996 adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes), theatrical stagings, operas and ballets. The most famous love story of all time and a staple of high school curriculums, "Romeo and Juliet" tells the tragic story of two young lovers who stop at nothing to be together despite the intense rivalry of their families. This production of "Romeo and Juliet" marks the first staging of the play — in its explosive entirety — at Chicago Shakespeare Theater.
