Palette & Chisel
In a landmark Italianate mansion, complete with a coach house and secret garden, is a unique colony of artists. This is the Palette & Chisel, a jewel on Chicago’s Gold Coast. Perhaps you have passed by and wondered what might be happening behind the wrought-iron fence at 1012 N. Dearborn St.
About every two weeks, a new show opens giving you an opportunity to purchase fine art and discover emerging artists. The public is invited to view an exhibition of works by Marion Steffy and Lenore Murphy in the galleries of the historic Palette & Chisel Fine Arts Academy, 1012 N. Dearborn Ave. The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, April 22, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., and extends through May 1.
Steffy works exclusively in oil, painting plein air and in her studio to create striking and vibrant images. This exhibition offers the artist’s collection of still life and landscapes painted throughout the world. Through splashes of color and unique compositions, Steffy renders her subjects with a palette of color to express the warmth and beauty of nature. Her works are in private collections and she has exhibited at the Chicago Cultural Center, the Viet Name Museum and Gallery, the Palette, Pumpernickel Gallery, Union Pier, Michigan, and galleries throughout the country.
Murphy works in a variety of media: Watercolor, Oils, Chinese Brush, and Conte. Many of her landscapes are plein air from Chicago and from trips in Europe and other continents. Also, she will have oil portraits of models in the exhibit. Murphy’s paintings are in corporate offices in several midwestern states and in private collections throughout the country. She has exhibited at Palette & Chisel, Friends of the Arts, and several art shows in the Chicago area. This May, June, and July she will be exhibiting her work at the John Merlo Branch Library, 644 W. Belmont Ave.
Stop in as a patron, a curious passerby, a person seeking a unique arty experience, or a neighbor, and become part of a gathering of artists.

Kids' Pick
"The Cabinet": This adult puppet show is too weird, slow and scary for anyone under 10, but your moody tween will love it. The Victorian goth-chic, the creepy subject matter and the Johnny Depp good looks of the leading puppet will please any kid who likes Tim Burton or shops at Hot Topic.
