Gordon Tech High School recalls visit of Pope John Paul II

Two years before being installed as Pope John Paul II, Cardinal Karol Wojtyla, then Archbishop of Krakow, Poland, visited Gordon Tech High School on Aug. 20, 1976. He and his party were greeted by administrators of the school. Shown above are, from left, Rev. Edwin Mitrenga, CR, principal of Gordon Tech; Cardinal John Cody of Chicago; Rev. Frank Rog, CR, Provincial; Cardinal Wojtyla; Bishop Alfred Abramowicz of Chicago; and Rev. Edward Pajak, Pastor of Holy Innocents Church.
“It was a memorable event,” recalls Rev. Joseph Glab, CR, current President of Gordon Tech. “We were all impressed with Cardinal Wojtyla’s genuine concern and interest in the status of Catholic education in the United States. The Resurrection Fathers and Brothers had close ties with him as Archbishop of Krakow and with our Roman Curia while he was the pope."
