Queen of Angels Catholic Church is hosting a seminar on employment law for low-wage workers, from 1:45 to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 17, at the church, 2330 W. Sunnyside Ave. The seminar will inform low-wage workers about laws that govern the workplace for native-born and immigrant workers in Chicago. Topics of discussion will include workplace safety, workplace injuries, minimum-wage requirements, and the treatment of workers equally regardless of gender, age, race, religion or disability.
The seminar will be led by Jose Oliva of the Chicago Interfaith Workers Rights Center. Members of the public are invited to attend the seminar so that they can be informed about the rights that all workers have and know where to go when help is needed. Information in the seminar will be available in both English and Spanish.
This seminar is sponsored by the Peace & Justice Committee at Queen of Angels Catholic Church. This seminar is part of the church's support of the dignity of human labor and is consonant with the Catholic Church's teachings on solidarity with the poor.
The Chicago Interfaith Workers' Rights Center is a program of the Chicago Interfaith Committee on Worker Issues and operates as a partnership between workers, religious institutions, unions, government agencies charged with protecting worker rights, and attorneys.
