BET offers 'Tribute to Etta James'

The Black Ensemble Theater Company continues its 29th season with the world premiere of a new musical written, directed and produced by Jackie Taylor, founder and executive director of the Black Ensemble Theater. Preview performances of "At Last: A Tribute to Etta James" began April 16, at the Black Ensemble Theater, 4520 N. Beacon St.
Five actresses play Etta James in the production. Carrie Abernathy, France Jean Baptiste, Desla Epison, Melanie McCullough and Dawn Mitchell will perform more than 20 of the singer’s biggest hits, showcasing her legendary versatility in R & B, country, soul, blues and jazz. Also appearing, as ensemble members, are Nikita Harris, David Simmons and Terrance Watts.
The musical director for the production is Robert Reddick (drums) with musical arrangements by Thomas Washington (piano). Other members of the on-stage band include Tracey Baker (bass), Dedrick Blanchard (piano), Oscar Brown II (guitar), Paul Howard (horn), Hank Ford (horn) and James Wheeler (guitar).
Rounding out the production team are Ron White (sound design), Carl Ulazack (set design), Denise Karscewski (lighting design) and Kanika Sago (costume design).
Tickets are priced at $35 for all performances (preview performances through April 23 are priced at $30). The performance schedule is Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 3 p.m. Discounts are available for seniors, students and groups. All performances will take place at The Black Ensemble Theater, 4520 N.
