The Joan W. and Irving B. Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Randolph Dr. in Millennium Park, will showcase remarkable opera in the month of May.
Chicago Opera Theater will present Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro" on Wednesday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, May 8, at 3 p.m.; Thursday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, May 14, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 - $105.
Brought to the stage by the team of Diane Paulus and Jane Glover, with a set designed by Tony Award nominee Robert Brill, this fresh, contemporary staging of "The Marriage of Figaro" is sure to delight audiences. Jane Archibald, who made her celebrated COT debut as Poppea in "Agrippina" in 2003, returns in the role of Susanna, and Krisztina Szabo, after a magnetic performance as Ottavia in last year's "L'incoronazione di Poppea," appears as the Countess, while Christian van Horn makes his COT debut as Figaro.
Chicago Opera Theater then presents Benjamin Britten's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" on Wednesday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, May 20, at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, May 22, at 3 p.m.; Thursday, May 26, at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, May 28, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 - $105.
Most familiar as Shakespeare's play, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is one of the greatest operas of the 20th century. Between the genius of Shakespeare's writing and the transcendence of Britten's orchestrations, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is an operatic treat. COT Resident Conductor Alexander Platt continues his work on the Britten operas with this new production by internationally acclaimed director Andrei Serban. Stunning young soprano Danielle de Niese, fresh from a series of successes in Paris, Lyon and London, returns to COT as Tytania, as does dashing Australian counter-tenor Tobias Cole, who gave a gripping performance as the Voice of Apollo in COT's 2004 "Death in Venice," in the role of Oberon.
Tickets for all performances are available at the Harris Theater Box Office, by calling (312) 334-7777 or by visiting www.harristheaterchicago.org. Group discounts, student discounts and senior discounts are available for most
