For more than 125 years, magazines have been major influences on home furnishing, appealing to our longing for a comfortable and tasteful home. Beginning in the late 19th century, the consumer market burgeoned, and modern housewives began consulting magazines for illustrations and advice on keeping the “perfect home.”
Join Joan Hansen, a design historian with a background in consumer design, marketing and 19th century studies, as she highlights notable examples of British and American magazines from the Newberry’s collections to trace the history of interior design and its societal influences from 1880 to 1920.
The lecture begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, in the Newberry Library, 60 W. Walton St. A mini-exhibit of relevant materials from the Newberry’s collections will be on display from 5:30-6 p.m. Admission is $10, or $5 for Library Associates.
The Newberry Library’s Wednesday club features presentations, conversation, and refreshments on the first Wednesday of every month. The Wednesday club is hosted by the Newberry Chapter, a group of young Newberry Library Associates. For more information, e-mail Wednesday@newberry.org or call (312) 255-3510.
