Local mom writes, performs in comedy about child-rearing
"Who’s Driving the Bus?!? My Year as a Kindergarten Mom" is a one-woman comedy especially for parents by Chicago actor/writer Tracy Egan, based on her daughter’s kindergarten year, to be presented at Apollo Theater Studio, 2540 N. Lincoln Ave., beginning Wednesday, May 4, at 8 p.m. Forget college — the real "letting go" for parents comes when they strap a backpack on a child and send him or her off to kindergarten – along with those looming questions like "will the other kids be smarter and better behaved?" Parents themselves metaphorically return to grade school when their children begin it, and themes of regression, competition and the basic desire to "fit in" and "be liked" surface during the kindergarten field-trip, the parent-teacher conference and the PTA meeting.
This show blows the lid off all things grade school as Egan portrays 15 different characters including the overachieving mother, the kindergarten teacher and the grade school social worker.
Run time is about 90 minutes with one intermission. The show plays Thursdays – Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 3:30 p.m., through June 5. For tickets, call (773) 935.6100. The price is $30 for all tickets; groups of 10 or more, $25 each.
Tracy Egan is the mother of a three- and a seven-year-old and has filled her child-rearing, theatrical hiatus with car pools, shopping for the just-right snacks and supervising everyday math homework. A graduate of Northwestern University’s Theater Program, she has been featured in numerous films, episodic television shows and national television commercials.
