Chicago Botanic Garden courses to inspire city gardeners in Lincoln Park

City dwellers seeking creative gardening solutions for challenging city conditions, or those planting a garden in a small space, need travel no further than Lincoln Park to take advantage of School of the Chicago Botanic Garden courses.
The School will offer 11 classes from June through August at the Notebaert Nature Museum. This location offers easy access to parking and the opportunity for expanded offerings such as hands-on workshops. Classes are taught by gardening experts and Chicago Botanic Garden staff, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays. The schedule is as follows:
Herbs in the City - June 6
Denise Handwerker, Frontera Grill gardener, offers this introduction to growing herbs organically. She discusses herbs for containers, garden design, maintenance, harvesting, and using herbs. The cost is $37. Chicago Botanic Garden members and Chicago residents pay $29.
Gorgeous Container Gardens - June 13
Beth Levy, landscape and container designer, Garden Renaissance, Inc., shows how to fill containers with dramatic color and texture by using perennials, annuals, herbs and grasses in interesting combinations. The cost is $33. Chicago Botanic Garden members and Chicago residents pay $26.
Feng Shui in the Garden - June 20

Rosa Urbanus: Rose Gardening in Urban Conditions - June 27
Brett McNish, horticulturist, Chicago Botanic Garden, introduces cultural methods and tips for the urban rose gardener. Pressed Flower Designs - July 11
Pressed flower designer Gertrude Novak shows how to design attractive cards and pictures with pressed flowers. Get Started with Iris - Aug. 1
Horticulturist and garden writer Greg Speichert shows how to plant, divide, design with and care for Iris of all kinds, and what to look for when ordering or purchasing plants. Sushi-making Workshop - Aug. 8
Culinary instructor Yahna Awazu shows how to choose and purchase sushi materials and ingredients, explains the different types of sushi, and demonstrates how easy and economical it can be to create these delicacies at home. Orchids 101 - Aug. 22 and 29
Jerry L. Garner, Ph.D., horticulturist/assistant secretary and newsletter editor, Illinois Orchid Society, leads this beginners' course on selecting orchids suitable for one's home and growing conditions. He discusses light, temperature, humidity and media requirements, and offers a hands-on opportunity to try potting, propagation and other techniques. The cost is $65. The Notebaert Nature Museum is located at 2430 N. Cannon Dr. in Lincoln Park, just north of the Lincoln Park Zoo. Free street parking is available on both sides of Cannon Drive. A public lot is located on Stockton Drive next to the Conservatory. Fees are $3 for the first half hour and $1 for each additional half-hour, up to $8.
