Maurice Nagle, a DePaul alumnus and counselor at SCORE, returned to his alma mater yesterday to give a $1,000 grant from SCORE to Professor Harold Welsch to further entrepreneurial activities at DePaul University's Coleman Entrepreneurial Center.
SCORE is a nonprofit association that provides counseling, workshops and other resources to entrepreneurs and small business, and donated these funds to student groups to help develop the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
This was more than a homecoming for Nagle, who has been a SCORE volunteer at DePaul for over 20 years. In the early 1980s, he worked with Welsch as a judge of student business plan presentations. In that era, SCORE and DePaul took the entrepreneur program to the next level by sponsoring a competition for teams from area colleges and universities. "The quality of presentations went up as DePaul professors counted participation towards final grades, which both motivated students and gave them practical experience with business problems," recalls Nagle.
The contribution will likely be allocated to operations. "The center has five phone lines to handle inquires for training and counseling programs, and we plan to use the money ... to staff these phones," he explained. |
