Valued volunteer

Lake View resident Elaine Lincoln was honored by Blind Service Association (BSA) President John Power at the organization’s recent volunteer awards luncheon. Lincoln has been a valued volunteer for over 40 years, helping hundreds of blind and visually impaired Chicago area residents. BSA, at 22 W. Monroe St., is a non-profit organization that helps blind and visually impaired persons to achieve their personal and professional goals through one-to-one reading, support groups, low vision consultations, referral services, and a scholarship program. Clean & Green Volunteer Clean-Up
On Saturday, May 14, local residents can make an immediate difference in their neighborhoods by volunteering time and efforts to take part in Mayor Daley’s Spring Clean & Green Day. All you have to do is sign up and join other volunteers at a location close to you that could really use a good cleaning. The City will work with you and your community organization to provide use on that day of all brooms, rakes, shovels and bags needed to get the job done. One man needed
The Ravenswood Food Pantry, located at 2200 W. Giddings St. in Lincoln Square, is in need of a man who can unload heavy boxes from the delivery truck every other Thursday of the month from about 9 a.m. until noon. Improv Olympic
"Shecky Kulhan: Theater of the Mind" previews on Thursday, May 5, at 8 p.m. and officially opens on Thursday, May 12, running through June 16 at the Improv Olympic’s Del Close Theater, 3541 N. Speaking of creative process

National Jewish Book Award winner Dara Horn (seated), author of "In the Image," shared insights into the creative process as a featured speaker at Women’s American ORT “Lunch with a Reflective View,” Sunday, April 10, at Bryn Mawr Country Club in Lincolnwood. The Young Leadership event drew 250 guests, including Gold Coast residents Deborah Stonebraker (from left); daughter Hannah, a student at Francis Parker; and Beth Singer; and raised $50,000 for education, including the new Students at Risk program to help economically disadvantaged students in Israel stay in school.

Celebrating our Art
An exhibit of paintings and memoir writing by members of the Center for Older Adults at Fourth Presbyterian Church, 126 E. Chestnut St., will open with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 5. Refreshments will be served. Guests may enter the church at 126 E. Chestnut St. The event is open to the public without charge. Drawings in a variety of media and handcrafted jewelry will be sold. Bach and Beyond
Enjoy Bach and Beyond: Music for the Community on Sunday, May 15, at 3 p.m. in St. Josaphat Church, 2311 North Southport Ave. Hear Nora Williams as soloist in the Handel Concerto for Viola and Orchestra in B minor, and Sandra Cross, Cynthia Hill, Luis Galvez, and Tony Barton in selections from the J. S. Bach Mass in b minor. Jill Greenman, Celeste Martino, and Jane McDonald Sullivan will be select soprano soloists in the Vivaldi Gloria.
The singers will be assisted by the Bach and Beyond Chorus and Orchestra under the direction of artistic director Scott Carles Will. Tire Bounty
Get rid of those dirty abandoned tires and help rid your community of the dangerous and unhealthy eyesores. Clean up your community and make money at the same time. Any Chicago community group or organization will receive 50 cents for each abandoned tire collected and dropped off at Streets and Sanitation Division Yard, 2505 W. Grand Ave., on Saturday, May 14, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. No tires from businesses and no tires with rims will be accepted. For more information, call 311.
Epilepsy Walk
The fifth annual Greater Chicago Epilepsy Walk takes place on Saturday, May 21, in Lincoln Park. The 5K (3.1 mile) walk begins at 9:30 a.m., with participant check-in starting at 8 a.m. Refreshments and family-friendly entertainment will follow the walk. Individuals may sign up online at www.epilepsychicago.org. Registration forms are also available at Jewel-Osco locations. Registration is $25 for adults and teens 13 and older, and $15 for children ages 7-12. There is no registration fee for children 6 and under. Learn about Estate Planning
Are you thinking about drafting a will? Do you want to know the difference between wills and trusts? Learn about these and other estate planning issues at a free “Law in The Library” Seminar, led by a Chicago-area attorney who will discuss estate planning and end with a question-and-answer session. The “Estate Planning” seminar will be held at Harold Washington Library, 400 S. State St., on Monday, May 23, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Reservations are not required.
The last “Law at the Library” seminar for this season will be held in June and will cover the topic “Starting a Small Business.”
Legal Leaders Luncheon
On May 10, De La Salle Institute will be hosting its inaugural Legal Leaders Luncheon at the University Club of Chicago, 76 E. Monroe St. The reception will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the luncheon starting at noon. The keynote address will be provided by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who will speak about overcoming the destructive cycle of poverty and crime through education.
Featured at the event will be Mr. Robert E. Cronin, who will receive the Justice Michael A. Bilandic Award, which is named in memory of Bilandic, an esteemed alumnus of De La Salle who gave decades of public service in the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government, including serving the City of Chicago as Mayor from 1976 to 1979.
Cronin is an attorney and recently retired as a partner in the law firm Sidley & Austin, having served the firm as partner since 1988. Cronin has spent a career in labor management law and is currently involved with child welfare law and adoption.

National Tap Dance Day Celebration
Chicago Human Rhythm Project celebrates National Tap Dance Day with two weekends of concerts May 13-22 at the Vittum Theatre, 1012 N. Noble St. Jason Samuels Smith will serve as host and emcee May 13-15 with special guest Arthur Duncan, best known for his long career as a tap master on the Lawrence Welk Show. Diane Walker will host the May 19-22 performances with special guest Jimmy Slyde (schedule permitting), a featured dancer in the movie "Tap" with Gregory Hines and widely acclaimed as the greatest living rhythm tap master. Each of the six performances will feature a different line up of Chicago’s leading tap and percussive dance companies, including the ensemble BAM!, Especially Tap Chicago, Jimmy Payne’s “Rhythm of Life,” Rhythm ISS, Billy Siegenfeld’s Jump Rhythm Jazz Project, Reggio “The Hoofer” McLaughlin and Chicago’s octogenarian vaudeville legend, Ernest “Brownie” Brown. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $25, $20 for students and seniors, and are available at (773) 281-1825.
