Attempted bank robbery
A “thin” Hispanic woman, 20-25, 5’3”, attempted to rob TCF Bank in Jewel, 3630 N. Southport Ave., at 10:04 a.m. Monday, April 25. She approached the counter and handed the teller a deposit slip with the name Agnes Santiago signed in the name portion. The teller offered to fill out the rest of the slip for her. The offender then raised her right arm, displaying a long sleeved sweater over her right hand, and said she had a gun.
At this point the offender asked the teller if she had any money. “Yes.” She then asked if she had hit the alarm button and again the teller said “yes.” The offender then fled the scene without any currency. Police toured the area; the FBI has been notified. |

Sleeping through burglary
While the resident was sleeping, a burglar entered an apartment in the 3100 block of N. Lake Shore Dr. on Saturday, April 16, using an unlocked door for access. The only item taken was a laptop computer. The resident awoke at noon to discover the loss. An evidence technician was summoned to seek fingerprints.
Phone, rings
A burglar got 15 silver rings and a cell phone between 4 and 6 p.m. Saturday, April 16, when the resident of an apartment building in the 600 block of W. Grace St. was out of her apartment. The resident went to a computer lab within the building and did not lock her door while she was gone, permitting entry to the burglar.
Pried door
Someone pried open the front door of an apartment in the 600 block of W. Surf St. on Saturday, April 16, between 1 and 6:30 p.m. The burglar took a Canon camera and a Toshiba laptop.
Not again
On Sunday, April 10, a resident of the 4700 block of N. Beacon St went to lunch with friends from 1 to 3:30 p.m. He returned to find the front door kicked in. The victim entered to find things knocked to the floor, and four DVDs, 80 CDs and $120 missing. The scene was too contaminated to fingerprint. On Sunday, April 17, this resident returned from school at 3 p.m. to discover the front door pried open. Missing were 15 DVDs, one DVD player, a radio and a PlayStation with eight games. An evidence technician was summoned.
'Excuse me'
In the 400 block of W. Diversey Ave., an elderly couple was startled when a burglar ran out of their apartment at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 19. On an otherwise normal evening, the man carried out the trash. His wife headed toward the bathroom, and suddenly a black male exited the bathroom and ran out the back door. As he passed the husband, the burglar said, “Excuse me.” The couple later discovered that over $600 worth of jewelry had been stolen.
The burglar was 24-25, 6’2”, 220 lb.; and wore dark clothing.
Wedding rings
A burglar made off with a man’s wedding ring ($600) and a woman’s wedding ring ($2,400) - both inscribed “Thee, Thee, Thee”- as well as a woman’s watch ($1,000) and $300 in coins, from an apartment in the 4200 block of N. Marine Dr. The crime occurred Thursday, April 28, and there were no signs of forced entry.
Sex offender: Prohibited zone
A security guard observed a man in a red Dodge mini van parking near Graeme Stewart Elementary School, 4525 N. Kenmore Ave., and watching the children from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day from April 4 to April 12. The guard contacted police, who located and interviewed the man, who turned out to be a 70-year-old registered sex offender. The man claimed to be looking for a parking spot in order to visit his doctor. He acknowledged that he was aware that as a registered sex offender he was not supposed to be by the school. He was arrested and taken to the 23rd District.
Out the window
An alert neighbor helped to limit a fire in an apartment building in the 4500 block of N. Dover St. on Sunday, April 10. Around 7 a.m., she smelled smoke and went downstairs. She alerted a neighbor that something in his apartment was on fire. He ran upstairs and found that his bedroom mattress was on fire, so he immediately opened a window and threw out the mattress. Apparently the blaze was caused by a candle.
Not a valet
Two men were each victims of a deceptive practice on the afternoon of Thursday, April 21, when they were fooled by con men pretending to be parking valets. In each case, the victim gave $25 to the men to have a car parked in a lot in the 3700 block of N. Wilton Ave. In reality, that lot is CTA property and no one is permitted to park there.
Credit card fraud
An Uptown man notified police on April 25 that someone was using his Visa card at Jewel, department stores and gas stations. He was instructed to contact the credit card fraud department and the credit bureaus.
Theft of services
At 6'2” and 162 lb., the suspect thought he could squeeze through the CTA turnstile without paying a fare to move the bar. He was right. However, police officers observed the act and arrested him for theft of services. The crime occurred April 25 at 1:40 p.m. at the Wilson Ave. el station.
Swiped from Jeep
The tire and wheel were stolen from the back of a Jeep parked in the 1700 block of W. Belle Plaine Ave. April 19-20.
Jeep envy
On April 21, police observed three men in the parking lot of Bridgeview bank, 1228 W. Lawrence Ave., attempting to remove the spare tire of a Jeep. When the men spotted the officers, they stopped the attempt, got into a car and began to flee. The police stopped the car and arrested them for attempted theft. In addition, the driver had no license or insurance and was cited for that. |
19th and 20th Districts
Criminal sexual assault
A 19-year-old female student was raped near Demon Dogs on Fullerton Ave. around 3 a.m. Tuesday, April 19. She was walking along when a man grabbed her, pushed her against a fence and then pushed her against a building. He sexually assaulted her then fled. He was described as black, 25-30, 5’9”, 185 lb., with an anchor tattoo on his right shoulder. He smelled “smoky,“ and he had a five o'clock shadow and yellow, crooked teeth. The offender wore dark baggy jeans and a red/orange sweatshirt.
Armed robbery of gas station
The Shell Station at 3552 N. Ashland Ave. was the target of an armed robbery on Thursday, April 21, at 12:25 a.m. The offender entered the service station and asked where the brake fluid was. He carried a bottle of brake fluid to the counter, then displayed a blue steel semi-automatic and demanded all the cash. Holding the gun to the attendant’s side, he went around and removed all the cash from the register. He then asked for the safe; the attendant pointed out the metal drawer of change, which the offender emptied. At this point the man fled southbound on Ashland Ave. in a maroon late '90s four-door Buick.
The offender was described as black, 30s, 6”, 200 lb., with a goatee and dark complexion.
Injured during attack
A delivery man for a Chinese restaurant was attacked and robbed by four thugs at 12:40 a.m. Sunday, April 24, in the 2400 block of N. Orchard St. The first offender demanded his wallet and struck him about the face. When he tried to escape, the other three held him so the first offender could somehow cut him in the lower back, causing bleeding. The thugs threw him to the ground, took his wallet with $255 in it, grabbed the food, and kicked him before fleeing.
Two of the offenders were black, one Hispanic, and one white; all were roughly 20 years old. The victim was taken to Lincoln Park Hospital, treated and released.
Robbed at gunpoint
At 11:45 p.m. April 26, a man was robbed at gunpoint in the 4300 block of N. Oakley Ave. The offender approached the victim and displayed a chrome-plated revolver, demanding his money and his backpack. The victim complied, losing money, a cell phone, a CD player, various CDs, and miscellaneous papers and check stubs. The offender was a black male, 23-28, 5’11”, 180 lb., with a light complexion and black curly hair in a ponytail. He wore a black puffy jacket, baggy jeans, and black and white gym shoes.
Attempted strong arm robbery
An offender began harassing a 12-year-old boy for money at 4:54 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, in the 2300 block of W. Lawrence Ave. When the victim said he had no money, the offender hit him on the back of the head and then reached into the boy's pocket. The victim yelled for help and ran.
Police sent a flash message but did not find the offender, described as a black male, 14-16, 5’, with a short afro.
Strong arm robbery
Two offenders jumped a 15-year-old boy at 3 p.m. Friday, April 22, in the 2800 block of N. Lincoln Ave. They took his jacket and school bag, went through the pockets and made off with a cell phone. They were described as white males, 15-16, 5’8”, 170-180, with fair complexions and short hair. One had black hair and the other strawberry blonde.
Pried window
A computer and some software were among items taken in a burglary in the 1800 block of W. School St. April 23-24. Someone pried open a rear kitchen window to gain entry. A laptop ($2,500), miscellaneous software ($5,500) and a digital camera ($500) were stolen.
Laptop gone
A laptop ($1,300) was stolen in a burglary in the 3600 block of N. Paulina St. on Sunday, April 24. The crime apparently occurred between 12:30 and 2:30 a.m. The laptop was located on a rear porch, and the window had been broken and then opened by the offender.
Rum and cash
Two bottles of rum and $327 were looted when an apartment in the 2700 block of N. Hoyne Ave. was burglarized Monday, April 25. The unlocked back window was pushed open to gain entry.
Electronics stolen
An apartment in the 4400 block of N. Hamilton Ave. was burglarized Monday, April 25. The front door was pried open. Taken was a video camera ($600), laptop ($1,100) digital camera ($500), and costume jewelry ($100).
Cologne, jewelry, more
An offender broke the rear door to an apartment building in the 2200 block of W. Irving Park Rd. on Monday, April 25. He looted one apartment, taking bracelets, earrings, watches, DVDs, cologne, PlayStation games, and a large red fleece men’s jacket. Credit cards and IDs were also taken. |
