The CTA will present its proposal for a new, larger Fullerton El Station at a community meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the Cortelyou Commons Building, 2330 N. Fremont St.
CTA Chairman Valerie Jarrett and President Frank Kruesi will be present to hear community feedback on a number of concerns, including architectural design of the new station, disabled accessibility, train noise and traffic congestion on Fullerton.
Ald. Vi Daley (43rd) said, “During the past year we’ve been meeting with a working group of community representatives on plans for the station. Now, the CTA is ready to present its initial proposal to the larger community. It’s not only important to have the input of people who live near the station, but we also need to make sure that we hear from the people who regularly use the Fullerton station.”
Opponents of the CTA plan fear that expanding the station would mean destroying historic buildings such as DePaul’s 72-year-old gothic-style Hayes-Healy gymnasium, located south of Fullerton and east of the train station.
The Fullerton El proposal is part of a general plan to ease overcrowding resulting from increased ridership, by expanding Brown Line trains to eight cars and expanding the stations to accommodate them. The Fullerton station is the sixth busiest in the CTA system. Also, the CTA seeks to fulfill an agreement with the federal government to make the Fullerton station handicapped-accessible by 2008.
An August meeting on the proposed expansion of the Armitage El station drew about 180 citizens and heated debate.
