Weiss Memorial Hospital builds new ER and ICU

Weiss Memorial Hospital is building a new emergency department and intensive care unit as part of a 45,000 square foot renovation and expansion project that includes a convenient new pavilion entrance, beautiful new lobby with a gift ship, coffee bar and patient registration area.

The new 8,000 square foot emergency department will meet the varying needs of patients. Those with immediate, life threatening and urgent conditions will be cared for in state-of-the-art, private treatment rooms. Weiss is also creating a separate “fast-track” component with private exam/consult rooms for less severe cases. The hospital has a variety of healthcare specialists, including board-certified physicians and highly trained emergency medicine nurses.

According to Susan Nick, R.N., Ph.D., vice president, clinical services, privacy is a major concern of emergency department visitors. The new emergency department replaces traditional, curtain cubicles with treatment rooms with doors and floor-to-ceiling walls. “Weiss Hospital will soon be able to treat its more than 16,000 yearly emergency department patients with improved timeliness and privacy,” she said. “Throughout the planning process, the emphasis has been on the patient. We’ve tried to create an environment where patients’ conversations and activities remain confidential.”

A special elevator connects the emergency department to a new, 16-bed intensive care unit. The ICU will feature highly advanced resources for critically ill patients. The increased space and improved design will ensure quality care for even the most complex medical challenges.

“With this expansion, we certainly will be poised for growth as we expect to serve more than 20,000 emergency department patients in these new facilities,” said Edward Cucci, hospital president. “This project is part of a rebuilding and modernization process that is geared toward meeting the present and future needs of the diverse communities served by Weiss.”

The new expansion will be unveiled to the community during a special open house to be held on Saturday, Dec. 1.
