Knitwear company takes on heartwarming causes

How can a young knitwear firm in Ravenswood make a difference to women’s health? “We’re donating five percent of our sales in October to the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Research Foundation, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” said Norma Sabesin Zeiger, the co-founder, with her sister Hyla Sabesin Finn, of a ten-year-old company called norma & hyla. “We plan to choose a different charity each month. For November and December it will be the American Red Cross.”

The knitwear design and manufacturing firm last month opened its design studio to the public with the launch of entwine, an new knitwear collection. Featuring made-in-Chicago, handloomed sweaters, skirts and accessories for women and children, the new line is available exclusively at the design studio, also called entwine, located at 4541 N. Ravenswood Ave., and on the Web site entwinedesigns.com. Customers are able to work with Zeiger to special order pieces in the color and size of their choice. They can also choose from a wide range of stock items.

Unlike a traditional store, entwine is open for month-long stretches at the beginning of each season to coincide with the debut of a new collection. The remainder of the year, entwine is open on a by-appointment basis and to host special charitable fund-raising events.

“Our vision for entwine is to create a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere in which we hope to eventually offer knitting demonstrations and lessons, serve as a home for groups such as book clubs to meet and as a venue for small art shows and fund-raising events,” said Zeiger. The Ravenswood location is south of the Metra stop at Lawrence and Ravenswood avenues, and north of the Brown Line el stop at Montrose Ave.
