Birdwalks for new birders

Over 60 million Americans are involved in birding, making it the most popular family outdoor recreation in the country. The Chicago Audubon Society offers an easy way to get in on the fun this spring with Special Birdwalks for New Birders, from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, and Saturday, May 28, at North Park Village Nature Center, 5801 N. Pulaski Rd.
These walks are designed to help new birders see and enjoy as many birds as possible on their first outing. The program starts with an indoor briefing on the basics, providing tips on identifying birds and how to use binoculars. Then, experienced Audubon guides help new birders spot and identify birds during a leisurely walk through the Nature Center.
"We had no idea how many people would show up when we launched the first new birder walk three years ago," says Chicago Audubon guide Don Klimovich, a long-time Lincoln Square resident. "Now, because of the tremendous response, we expanded it...and recruited additional guides."
The Chicago Audubon Society, a local affiliate of the National Audubon Society, is dedicated to conserving birds, other wildlife and their habitat. Chicago Audubon members support a wide variety of projects such as restoration of Skokie lagoons, rescuing birds colliding into downtown skyscrapers during migration, and bird population or nesting surveys.
The birdwalks are free, plus easy-to-use binoculars and field guides may be checked out at no charge. Ample free parking is available at the Nature Center. Individuals and families are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required. To register, contact the Chicago Audubon Society at (773) 539-6793 or cas@chicagoaudubon.org.
