Ald. Burton F. Natarus (42nd) met with state Rep. Danny Davis, area postal managers, and representatives of the letter carriers union to discuss concerns over inconsistent mail delivery to high rise residential buildings in downtown Chicago. All agreed to work together to resolve the issue.
"Efficient, accurate delivery of the mail is vital to the welfare of the community," Natarus said. "We’ve got to make sure people are getting their mail."
Akinyinka Akinyele, who tracks delivery records for the downtown area, said that performance has improved in recent months since the postal service changed the way its database lists addresses. Post office representatives also pointed to the need to hire and train more carriers due to the large number of recent retirements.
Davis joined Natarus in urging the postal service to initiate a public relations campaign to remind the public that addresses must include apartment numbers and correct zip codes to ensure accurate delivery to high rise buildings. "If an address does not include an apartment number, there may be no way for the carrier to find the correct recipient," Natarus explained. Natarus will join Davis at an upcoming community meeting to discuss this issue with 42nd Ward constituents.
Davis is a senior member of the Congressional Postal Service Subcommittee. Natarus has represented residents of the 42nd Ward since 1971. |
