Pay attention! he barked

A dog barked to alert the family that a burglar was coming in the unlocked rear door — but the family disregarded the warning, assuming that the dog was simply agitated by a neighbor's arrival home. The incident occurred in the early morning hours Friday, May 6, in an apartment in the 3800 block of N. Pine Grove Ave. The burglar pushed open the door and took a cell phone, credit cards, and $60. Apparently the barking dog frightened off the burglar so he retreated from the residence. The family was in the front of the apartment at the time.



19th and 20th Districts

Aggravated vehicular hijacking
Displaying a handgun, three offenders took a car and money from a man and a woman in the 1100 block of W. Winona St. at 10:28 p.m. Tuesday, May 10. The two victims were sitting in their Volkswagen when they were approached by the offenders, who asked for the time. They responded that they didn't have the time.
At this point one offender pulled out a gun and made both victims get out of the car. They opened the woman's purse and took $10, then took the car keys and made the victims move away from the car. All three offenders got into the car and proceeded south.
Police sent a flash message and located the car parked at Winthrop Ave. and Argyle St. The victims were brought to the scene where they identified the car; however, the keys were missing. Because the male victim spoke no English, he did not understand the responding officers' warnings to not enter the car. He did enter the car, contaminating the scene.
The offenders, two men and a woman, were black, and 18-19 years old.

Pickpockets picked up
A pair of suspected pickpockets were arrested after an incident at the Bryn Mawr CTA platform, 1119 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., at 5:35 p.m. Tuesday, May 10. The victim, a 26-year-old man, was trying to get on a train. The first offender pretended to get his foot caught in the door of the train and he grabbed the victim's hands. At this time the second offender unbuttoned the victim's back pocket and took his wallet. The victim felt his wallet being tugged, and turned around to say, "That's my wallet!" The pickpocket dropped the wallet and both offenders fled.
The victim called 911 and described the thieves and the direction of flight. Officers in the 5300 block of N. Winthrop were monitoring radio calls; they observed suspects matching the description. As the officers exited their car, one suspect walked away and the other ran. Both were taken into custody, positively identified by the victim, and transported to District 20. Field Winters, 40, and Melvin Thomas, 38, are to appear in Br. 29-2 on June 6 to face charges of theft.

Car swiped
A car was stolen from the 2000 block of W. Lawrence Ave. sometime May 6-9. The owner parked the silver 1997 Nissan Altima, locked the ignition and the doors, and took the keys. However, when he returned to the spot, the car was missing.

Stabbing over beer
According to police reports, a man who lives in the 1100 block of W. Argyle St. was stabbed by a friend of his roommate. Around 2:20 p.m. Monday, May 9, the offender insisted that the victim drink more beer. The victim refused to drink more, and just lay down on his bed. At this point the offender stabbed the victim in the left arm and in the chest above the heart, then he fled. Police are attempting to locate the offender, named Juan and described as Hispanic, 40-47, with white shoulder-length hair and a goatee. He was wearing a black jacket at the time of the stabbing. "Juan" rides a green women's bicycle and hangs out around Sheridan Rd. and Montrose or Wilson avenues.

Strong arm robbery
Eight black males, 15-17, jumped a 49-year-old computer researcher in the 1200 block of W. Lawrence Ave. around 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 4. The victim was carrying four bags of clothes and exploring the area. The first two offenders took two of the bags; when the victim tried to stop the robbery, the other six pushed him down and took the remaining two bags as well. The victim was injured. The clothes were valued at $250.

Burglar bounty
A burglar forced open the front door of an apartment in the 900 block of W. Argyle St. May 7-8. He took jewelry, two DVD player/VCRs, a laptop, and a stereo.

Loss valued at $2,310
A resident returned to an apartment in the 5600 block of N. Sheridan Rd. on Monday, May 9, to discover her computer and her camera missing. There were no signs of forced entry.

Despite locks
Someone stole a black 1998 two-door Ford Explorer from a parking lot in the 5200 block of N. Broadway on Sunday, May 8. The driver parked it at 2:30 p.m., locked the ignition and the doors, took the keys and went shopping. When she returned at 4 p.m., the car was missing. The car has Indiana plates.

Jumped by two teens
A man, 33, was jumped by two black males, 15-16, while walking through a parking lot in the 5000 block of N. Sheridan Rd. around 10:30 p.m. Friday, May 6. They pushed him down, punched and kicked him, demanding his money. The victim surrendered his wallet with $150, credit cards and driver's license, and his cell phone as well. Police located three possible offenders and brought them to the victims for a "show-up" identification but this proved negative.

Electronics, jewels stolen
Apparently a burglar lifted open a rear window to gain access to an apartment in the 4800 block of N. Hermitage Ave. on Friday, May 6. Taken was a wireless Internet card, a laptop, memory flash cards, a zip drive, Quicken software, a DVD player, a Canon digital camera, 50 CDs and a case, a shoulder bag, a watch, a gold and emerald necklace, gold and emerald earrings, a diamond tennis bracelet, diamond earrings, a silver pocket watch engraved "To Matt Love Tim and Chrissy," and $50 in change.

Earning her tips
At 9:05 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, a man walked into Thai Avenue Restaurant, 4949 N. Broadway, and spotted $27 on a table left by a customer to pay his bill. The man took the money and fled to the Argyle el platform, chased by a waitress. Meanwhile, a witness called 911 and alerted police, who rendezvoused with the waitress at the CTA station. There she positively identified the offender. George Stubbs, 28, of the 1500 block of S. Michigan Ave., is to appear in Br. 29-2 on June 24 to face charges of theft.

Stressful statement
A local man studied his bank statement this month and noticed that a check was cashed without his authority. The check, for $400, was made to a Sandro Tadic. Apparently the check was taken sometime in March.

Purse or baby
A nanny walking her charge along the 900 block of W. Berwyn Ave. was accosted by a thief at 2:40 p.m. Thursday, May 5. He said he wanted to look into the storage basket under the baby — and said he would take the baby if she did not let him look. He took the nanny's purse from the basket and fled. She lost $350, a Peruvian passport, IDs and keys.
He was described as black, 20-30, 6' to 6'2", with a slim build and an Afro. He was unshaven.

Stolen car
A driver parked a tan '94 Nissan Altima four-door in the 4800 block of N. Washtenaw Ave. Tuesday, May 10. He returned the next day to find the vehicle missing. He had locked the ignition and doors, and had taken the keys. The missing vehicle has IL plates 5358139.


18th and 23rd Districts

Attempted burglary
Three black males, 15-20, tried to pry open the back door of Game One, 4623 N. Clark St., at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 4. The noise alerted a nearby resident; when he came out to investigate, the offenders fled.

$25,000 of jewelry
A burglar made off with approximately $25,000 of jewelry — including a Gucci Wonderman watch with a black lizard band worth $10,000 — sometime May 4-5. The resident left her apartment in the 4300 block of N. Clarendon Ave., locking the doors but leaving one window open a crack. She returned to find that window open completely, permitting entry, and the front door unlocked as an exit. Inside, the home phone was missing. A blue gym bag was gone, as were a number of perfume bottles and the expensive jewelry. An evidence technician was summoned.

Determined burglar
A burglar struck an apartment in the 4700 block of N. Beacon St. sometime Thursday, May 5, forcing open a front door that was both locked and dead-bolted. Two watches and $300 were taken.

Contaminated scene
A burglary occurred in the 4100 block of N. Clarendon Ave. on Friday, May 6, during the same hours that a landlord was delivering a microwave oven. Taken was an I-Pod, a laptop and $30. The scene was contaminated by two roommates and two friends, all on the scene.

Trail of blood
A trail of blood spots marks the route a burglar took after shattering a living room window and climbing into an apartment in the 4700 block of N. Beacon St. He ransacked the residence, taking a suitcase, 150 CDs and a Raleigh men's mountain bike. The crime occurred Wednesday, May 11, between 9 a.m. and 3:40 p.m.

Bird sanctuary
Two men, ages 37 and 38, were arrested for public indecency in the bird sanctuary area in the 4600 block of N. Simonds Dr. at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 9. According to police reports, the men were masturbating in public. The area has a history of public indecency and is known as a site for gay sex. Police are setting up stings in that area.

Slice and swipe
A man was robbed as slept on a Red Line train at 5 a.m. Sunday, May 1. He woke up at the Sheridan station to find his blue jeans pocket cut and his wallet with $10 missing. Also gone was his cell phone and the gold ring from his finger. He asked nearby passengers if they had witnessed anything and they said no. The victim exited at the Addison station and contacted police.

Got your back
As a woman climbed the stairs to the Addison el platform, an unknown offender opened her backpack and stole her wallet. The pick-pocketing occurred at 8:25 a.m. Thursday, May 5. Lost was $223 plus credit cards; one credit card was used a few minutes later at 841 W. Irving Park Rd. to buy gasoline.

Quick crime
At the Fullerton el platform, a watchful pickpocket seized an opportunity at 1:45 p.m. Friday, May 6. A female student stepped on a train. Just as the doors were about to close, he took her wallet out of her purse and then hopped off the train just as the doors were closing. She lost various credit cards and IDs.

Bump and grab
At 8:16 p.m. Thursday, May 5, a salesman walking on the 3500 block of N. Broadway was bumped by an unknown black male. The offender approached from the rear, bumped him — and took the cell phone which was clipped to his jeans.

Follow him
The victim of an early morning pick-pocketing followed the offender to a nearby el station, where he notified police to arrest the perpetrator. The theft, of two $20 bills and one $50 bill, occurred at 1000 W. Addison St. at 12:20 a.m. Tuesday, May 10. The victim followed the offender to the Belmont el station, 945 W. Belmont Ave., and pointed him out to officers. Troy Riley, 42, of the 4000 block of N. Paulina St., was arrested. The cash was recovered from Riley and returned to the victim. Riley's court date is June 28 in Br. 29-2.

Financial identity theft
Someone used the name and social security number of a resident of the 700 block of W. Aldine Ave. in order to establish a People's Energy account. The victim was assessed a $220 bill. The theft was discovered May 11.

More identity theft
An Uptown resident received a W-4 form from a company that stated that she had worked for them in 2004. She called the company and found out that someone had used her name and social security number to work there. She reported the financial identity theft May 12.

4,000 smokes
Someone stole up to 20 cartons of cigarettes in a grab-and-run scheme on Friday, May 13. In Osco, 4355 N. Sheridan Rd., the offender took the cigarettes from behind a service counter, hid them inside a coat he was wearing, and fled out a back door of the store. The suspect was a white male, 30, 5'9" and 170 lb. The incident occurred at 6:34 a.m.
