Look up, look in, look out at Gross Park Sculpture Invitational

Over a dozen selected artists, from poets to dancers to sculptors, will be showcased outdoors for the juried, sixth annual Gross Park Sculpture Invitational. The free opening reception Saturday, May 21, from 3 to 7 p.m., invites the public to view art in celebration of Chicago's flora and fauna.
The exhibit, titled "Look up. Look in. Look out." will be on display on the 1700 block of W. Henderson St. (3300 N) from Saturday, May 21, through Sunday, July 17.
Suggested readings for the participants included the Jerry Sullivan book titled "Hunting for Frogs on Elston, and Other Tales from Field & Street," edited by Victor M. Cassidy and illustrated by Bobby Sutton, along with the Chicago Wilderness Magazine.
Featured artists are Mia Capodilupo, Joy Grad, Tom Hill, Gary Jackson, Nance Klehm, Danny Mansmith, Catherine Schwalbe-Bouzide, Lee Tracy, David Trost, Sean Williams, Marjorie Woodruff, and Mary Zehnder.
Jurors are Sara Bales, past president of Gross Park Neighbors Foundation;
Bruce Robbins, executive director of Lillstreet Art Center and founder of SOFA; and Paul Tuminaro, former Yello Gallery owner and supporter of the arts through organizations such as Hands On and the Gross Park Sculpture Invitational.
Maquettes and proposals for this juried exhibit will be on view at Lillstreet Art Center, 4401 N. Ravenswood Ave., through May 20.
Schedule for May 21 only:
noon - 8 p.m.: Raku firing, a dramatic, low fire ceramic firing process. $5 to $10 for each participant. 100 percent of the proceeds benefit Gross Park.
5 p.m.: Poetry by Jennifer Dotson and Eva Olsgard.
Immediately following: A talk about the flora and fauna of Chicago with Karen Mansfield and Karen Avery titled "What is it? Asking the question is everything."
6 p.m.: Lin Shook and Perceptual Motion, Inc. perform “Serpents” and “Bugs.”
Also available on opening night will be artist made, limited edition poetry/art books based on the theme, and Gross Park Neighbors t-shirts, with 100 percent of proceeds going to the maintenance and enhancement of Gross Park.
Gross Park Neighbors Foundation was formed in 1991, a community supported and tax exempt organization dedicated to the maintenance and enhancement of Gross Park and the surrounding neighborhood.
