Charming gala

Northlight Theatre’s 30th Anniversary Celebration was a grand one this year. With more than 300 guests attending, $193,000 was raised to help support the theater and its educational programs. The black-tie gala was held at the North Shore Center for Performing Arts and included a lavish cocktail hour, a silent auction and a nine-course tapas style meal. There was a lot of action at the silent auction and a great raffle too.
Side by side at the April 29 gala, from left, were Zachary Bernard of Logan Park; Sandra Barnett-White of Rogers Park, a Gala co-chair and board member; Isabel Bernard of Logan Park, and Jim White of Rogers Park, Gala co-chair.

From South-port to South-Flaah!...
The wildly funny play "Jewtopia" now at the Mercury Theater on Southport is moving South, to Florida. If you haven’t seen this wild comedy about a non-Jewish 30-something guy wanting to marry a Jewish girl so he won’t ever have to make another decision, you might want to before the show closes on Sunday, June 26.
Filled with jokes mocking Jewish stereotypical family life, this show goes beyond the borders making it a laugh for anyone regardless of religion
or ethnicity.

'Blanc' gala...
When the Design Industry comes to Chicago each year for the contract furnishings show NeoCon, it's Annual Gala time.
Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS/Chicago presents its 17th annual gala ,"Blanc," on Saturday, June 11, at one of Chicago’s most wondrous, "unofficial" landmarks: The South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. South Shore Drive.
Design professionals will gather in their "interpretive white tie" at the former elite Country Club (steps from the Lake Michigan) at 7 p.m. for the cocktail reception, followed by a gourmet dinner, non-stop entertainment, and a huge display of fireworks on the lawn at 10 p.m. (I would think it would be even more beautiful from the beach.)
Jennifer M. McGregor and Chris Coldoff are the event chairs who have put together an evening to remember. Besides the reception, dinner, dancing, fireworks, they have also planned a live auction that includes an exquisite display of modern and contemporary furniture, decorative art, dining packages, visits to spas and overnights at hotels.
The live auction features an array of unbelievable one-of-a-kind events such as a week stay at a James Nagle designed house in Santa Fe for six guests; an overnight for eight people at the Frank Lloyd-Wright-designed Meyer May house including dinner in the original dining room with the original furnishings; a case of Pinot Noir from the private reserve of the Humphrey Bogart estate; a Mies van der Rohe Barcelona Chair; and a breakfast to remember for eight guests at Tiffany’s on Michigan Ave. that will be prepared by Chefs Gale Gand and Rick Tramonto with a special guest. No, it’s not the late Audrey Hepburn or George Peppard. But it is a Chicagoan who is also an actor, writer, director, genius and a very funny man, the great Harold Ramis. The auction also offers items that I have not mentioned.
So get ready to boogie on the South Side at one of the most elegant places in town and make a reservation for this event of a life-time. To make a reservation or for additional information, call (312) 644-6412, go to the DIFFA web-site at www.diffachicago.org or send an e-mail to info@diffachicago.org. An individual ticket is $350.
If you decide to attend this swanky gala, be sure to check out the place. Take a look at the various shades of blue in the ornate lobby, the restored plaster floral patterns on the ceiling, and the lovely ceramic tile floors. The ballroom also features high arched windows on three sides which have breathtaking views of the beach and lake.

Seen the Green?…
It’s past St. Paddy’s day, but the green is always here. In this case it’s Chicago’s Green City Market that kicked off its 7th year and opened in Lincoln Park on Wednesday, May 18, and Saturday, May 21.
Two openings in one week is unusual, but this year for the first time in its history, Green City Market will not only be open every Wednesday but also every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Farmers will be there to sell their organic produce, chefs will be on hand to give cooking demonstrations, and there will be plenty of things to buy, such as: eggs, grains, flours, herbs, poultry, beef, lamb, mustards vinegars, organic breads and much more.
While you shop there’s breakfast crepes, scones, coffee and lots more to purchase so you can nibble as you shop. And each week something is a little different from the prior week.
On Saturday, June 4, Michael Altenberg, Chef of the trendy Bistro Campagne on Lincoln Ave., will be giving a demonstration at 10:30 a.m.
So show up at 1750 N. Clark St. (at Stockton) and check out the action, the people and the fun. Parking is available. For more information, scheduled events, recipes and more, go to the "Green City" market web site at
www.chicagogreencitymarket.org.

Don’t miss…
"Gorillas and Gatsby," the black tie gala on Friday, June 3, at Lincoln Park Zoo.
Hosted by the Auxiliary Board, the zoo action kicks off at 8 p.m. and only about 900 or so of your most intimate friends will be there to greet you when you arrive for the party of the summer.
Set amongst the animal houses on the zoo grounds, the evening features a dinner buffet, lots to drink, dancing to the music of the Gentlemen of Leisure, plus a raffle, and live and silent auctions.
On its 20th Anniversary the Board announced a $1 million pledge for the its Endowed Fund for Conservation and Science, which is a key world-class research, science and field
conservation programs.
Interested? For information and reservations, call (312) 742-2163 or visit the Zoo’s web site at www.lpzoo.org.
