Whimsical fun

A special retrospective exhibition of the work of Evan Sullivan (1948-2003) will be featured through July 11 in Café Selmarie Gallery, 4729 N. Lincoln Ave. The show features 35 original and limited edition prints and paintings. His work is a whimsical look at Chicago street scenes and neighborhoods featuring fantastic renderings of birds, animals, botanicals, landscapes and architecture.
Among the works on display is "LaSalle Street Cruisers," a 20-color serigraph with bulls, bears, pigs and vultures inhabiting LaSalle St. When Mr. Sullivan first exhibited the print in 1989 he explained, "I wanted to do a personal representation of the business community; humorous but not scathing. It's a whimsical off center attitude."
In "City Nests," a 30-color cityscape, a flamingo sticks its long neck out the window of a rehabbed Old Town house while other birds strut their stuff on the street below. This is a companion piece for the Old Town Art Fair poster that he did for the 1988 Art Fair. Both will be on exhibit and available for purchase at the Café Selmarie Exhibit.
Mr. Sullivan was classically trained at the world famous Cranbrook Academy of Art. He earned his MFA degree in Printmaking / Painting. For over 10 years, he produced the works at his North Side studio, Ravenswood Press, where he developed alternate ink chemistry for paper using oxidation drying. He printed and published his own editions in collaboration with American and European publishers.
His work can be seen in hundreds of museum, corporate and private collections internationally.
The fine art prints are limited editions of less than 200. Each is signed and numbered by the artist. For more information, please visit the exhibit or contact Kiersten or Beth Sullivan at (773) 279-0788 or basully@aol.com.
