'Educator of the Year' is principal of LPHS

Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal of Lincoln Park High School, has been named "2005 Educator of the Year" by the Northeastern Illinois chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, an international association for educators. This award goes annually to an educator who has contributed above and beyond the call of duty to improve education and the way of life for Chicago area students.
Karvelas came to Lincoln Park High School in 2004, having worked previously in the Chicago Public School system for 29 years as a high school English teacher, as an administrator, and as the principal of the Von Humboldt School. A product of the Chicago Public Schools herself, Karvelas holds a doctorate in School Leadership with an emphasis on reading. According to Karvelas, reading is key to success in all subject areas and has always been one of her top priorities.
