Letter to the Editor: Landmark district for Arlington Deming possible

To the Editor:

Two major events occurred this week in the Arlington-Deming neighborhood.
A turn of the century home was demolished on Arlington Place and Ald. Vi Daley (43rd) requested the Landmark Division of the Department of Planning and Development to begin the survey for the district's preliminary landmark designation. The community has lost yet another home--the district's oldest building on Geneva Terrace was brought to the ground 11 months ago. But now the bleeding appears to be staunched, thanks to Ald. Daley's perseverance and leadership and the community's commitment.
For the past year, the alderman has taken the community through three public meetings, an advisory ballot, and direct neighbor to neighbor discussions to determine community sentiment. As she reported at the May 19 meeting, a majority of owners who responded are in support of landmarking as a district for our community.
We are so pleased that our neighbors have participated and spoken and voted and stood strong in their conviction that our built community must exist for future generations.
