CSO’s incredible
'Parties' continue...
It’s the 10th Anniversary of the exclusive “Parties of Note” given by the Governing Members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The exclusive parties (11 of them) began on June 4 but continue throughout the month. Before reading on, please be aware that most parties are limited to 30 or 40 guests and the ones mentioned below are priced at $200 per individual. Information about purchasing a ticket to any of the parties will be at the bottom of this story.
The events are underwritten by the hosts of each event and include private art collections, spectacular gardens and a glimpse into some very unusual and very private homes.
On Wednesday, June 15, the Party of Note “Tokyo to Taos” at 4:30 p.m. is given in a Gold Coast residence designed by David Adler and features an eclectic art collection that includes 18th Century Japanese screen paintings and woodblock prints, Chinese antique furniture and ceramics from Southeast Asia. While guests peruse the collection, they will be served Japanese sake and Australian wines. A buffet supper will be served and will be followed by a recital by a CSO musician.
Other parties include “Centuries of Style” on Wednesday, June 22, at 6 p.m., which is a look into the auction world. Sean Susanin, founder of Susanin’s Auctions, hosts the party and will guide guests as they view 19th and 20th century fine art; English, American and Continental furniture; and fine jewelry. A buffet supper will be served and guests can then enjoy a jazz recital by a CSO musician.
Other parties include “Chinoiserie Tableau” on Thursday, June 23, at 6 p.m. in an East Lake Shore Drive residence where guests will be served a sumptuous buffet and then view the elegant residence that features a collection of chinoiserie decorative art and Regency Furniture plus a full English Tea.
The “Country Grandeur” party on Saturday, June 25, takes place at Deer Ridge Farm in Honey Creek, WI, on a 200 acre estate. The “Neo-Classic" Haven on Wednesday, June 29, takes place at a residence in the Gold Coast which was featured in “Architectural Digest,” and the “Chicago Legend” party on Thursday, June 30, will be treated to an evening in the former “Playboy Mansion” the 72-room Beaux-Arts landmark.
As I mentioned above the “Parties of Note” are each given and sponsored by one of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Governing Members. Governing Members (540) provide leadership and advocacy for the Orchestra and work to provide a strong foundation for the Orchestra. All proceeds from the “Parties of Note,” chaired by Kathryn Babcock, benefit The Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
To purchase a ticket (if still available) to any one or more of the “Parties,” phone Jennifer Moran, Director of Governing Member Gifts, at (312) 294-3165.
Dancing and eating on Halsted St....
When the North Halsted Merchants Association puts on a street party there’s always dancing in the streets, plus a food fest and much more at the upcoming 5th annual “Halsted Tastes Better” food fest on Monday, June 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Halsted and Aldine streets.
This year’s restaurants include Kit Kat Lounge, Jack’s on Halsted, Roscoe’s Cafe, Arco de Cuchilleros, Las Mananitas, Yoshi’s Cafe and many others. The $30 (at the door) entry fee entitles you to eat as much as your stomach can hold, sample the beer and wine, water and soft drinks.
Live music will played by the band Midnight throughout the party, and even without Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, there will be plenty of “Dancing in the Streets."
For ticket information, call (773) 353-5939. Tickets may still be available in advance or at some of the participating restaurants. You can ask when calling. An individual ticket will cost $25 in advance or $30 at the door.
More than Pride ...
Although the 2005 Pride Parade isn’t until Sunday, June 26, the North Halsted Merchants Association are at it again with another outdoor festival the day before the parade, Saturday, June 25, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
“Pride Fest,” Chicago’s official Pride Parade Pre-Party, will be at Halsted and Waveland streets with an unbelievable line-up of entertainment.
Two different music stages will feature a variety of entertainment in tandem: one with dance music, the other with top name, local and regional headliners such as RuPaul, Lady Bunny, Circuit Mom, Jinx Titanic, plus the all-male volunteer twirling group ROTC (The Righteously Outrageous Twirling Corps), Lakeside Pride Freedom Band, and “Naked Boys Singing.”
Now in its third year, Pride Fest is a celebration that embraces the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
The cost of a ticket to “Pride Fest” is $5 and it benefits the Merchants Association. For additional information about the street party, call (773) 868-3010 or visit www.chicagoevents.com.
