Task force finds many gray areas under Sun Sun

Special to Inside

Mayor Daley's Dumpster Task Force has cast a giant shadow on the Sun Sun Snack Shop, 1117 W. Argyle St., closing it for rodent (mice) infestation and a creative but "el" advised attempt at food storage.
Task Force inspectors were in the area following up on rodent complaints when they traveled to the Sun Sun Snack Shop and found enough problems to write three critical and three serious violations before closing the establishment.
Inspectors found that Sun Sun had created a makeshift food storage area which utilized the el tracks up above as a roof. Inside this storage area, whose location gave new meaning to the term "fast food," inspectors found more than enough critical violations to justify shutdown. Food was gnawed into and in unsound condition, pest control was inadequate and food temperatures also lacked. Conditions inside were said to be "horrific," with soggy floors and plenty of rodent activity.
The condition of the structure itself was so bad that it was referred to the Building Department.
The door leading to the restaurant's food prep area was not able to keep out rodents which led to a serious violation for premises not rodent-proofed. Only 90 mice droppings were spotted but they were on top of food products and on key food prep surfaces. Additional serious violations were logged for failure to protect food during storage and for failing to use a grease container.
"Management did so many things improperly that we had no choice but to quickly close this establishment," said Streets & Sanitation
Commissioner Al Sanchez. "They are going to have a long road to travel before we are satisfied that they get it and are allowed to reopen."
The Dumpster Task Force was created in 1994 to help ensure thatbusinesses that place the public at risk by improper food handling and poor sanitary practices are shut down.
