At LPHS Service Learning is big deal

Lincoln Park resident gives remarkable community service

Kim Riley did an amazing 700 hours of community service during her four years at Lincoln Park High School, 2001 N. Orchard St..

Lincoln Park High School Senior Kim Riley has been honored for her outstanding community service. Riley accumulated an incredible 700 community service hours in her four years at LPHS. The Chicago Public Schools requires a minimum of 40 hours of service in order to graduate.
According to LPHS Service Learning co-ordinator Bernie Eshoo, this achievement is unique at LPHS since service learning became a requirement several years ago. Very few other students across the city have earned this many hours.
Some of Riley's volunteer experiences included the Appalachia Service Project, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, Park West Community Association, Old Town Triangle Community Association, and the Chicago Casablanca Sister Cities Committee. In addition to her community service activities, Riley is an honor roll student, National Honor Society member, Concert and Pep Band member for four years, a Model United Nations delegate, and a four-year member of the Swim and Water Polo teams. Outside of school she has also plays ice hockey. She was chosen to participate in a city wide student panel for a recent Chicago Public Schools Service Learning Conference. With plans for a career in physical therapy, Riley will attend St. Mary's University in Winona, MN, in the fall.
Also earning an outstanding number of hours were Qiaoli Huang (513), Angeline Mascarenas (370), Maria Valdovinos (336) and Antonia Lalagos (304). Further, 25 students participated in over 200 hours of service learning and an additional 60 students logged over 100 hours.
Service Learning is a hands-on teaching and learning method that provides an opportunity for students to expand their knowledge in conjunction with classroom work, as well as develop character and citizenship skills by doing service projects in the community.
