Resurrection Health Care has announced the addition of Saint Elizabeth Hospital, 1431 N. Claremont Ave., as the eighth hospital in its integrated health care delivery network. The transfer of sponsorship from Ancilla Services, Inc. based in Hobart, IN, was effective Oct. 1.
Saint Elizabeth Hospital became the fourth hospital this year to join Resurrection Health Care. Holy Family Medical Center in Des Plaines and Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital Center on Chicago’s near northwest side became part of Resurrection in March, in an agreement that brought the expanded system under the co-sponsorship of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth and the Sisters of the Resurrection. Saint Joseph Hospital in Chicago joined the system in July, when sponsorship of that hospital was transferred from Catholic Health Partners in Resurrection Health Care.
“The addition of Saint Elizabeth Hospital provides us another opportunity to extend our ministry into markets adjacent to our primary service area,” said Joseph F. Toomey, president and chief executive officer of Resurrection Health Care. “We are honored that the Archdiocese of Chicago and our co-sponsors have encouraged us to take the lead in creating an integrated health system that will strengthen and preserve the Catholic health care presence in Chicago,” he added.
“Joining Resurrection will allow Saint Elizabeth Hospital to continue to fulfill its charitable mission,” said Beth Kaminski, president and chief executive officer of Ancilla Systems. “The proximity of Saint Elizabeth to Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital Center will give patients increased access to a broader continuum of health care services.”
As part of the Resurrection Health Care, Saint Elizabeth will have access to systemwide management expertise through shared services such as finance, purchasing, information services, human resources, mission and marketing, according to Toomey. The hospital will enjoy access to capital at lower rates as well as greater savings through large scale group purchasing contracts as part of a large system.
With the addition of Saint Elizabeth Hospital, Resurrection Health Care includes 2,978 licensed hospital beds, 1,838 nursing home beds, 1,162 independent and assisted living retirement apartments, more than 3,200 physicians and more than 14,000 employees. The system has total assets of more than $1.4 billion and annual gross revenues of $2.2 billion.
Resurrection Health Care, co-sponsored by the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth and the Sisters of the Resurrection, is the largest Catholic health system in Chicago. The comprehensive health care delivery system includes eight hospitals, 10 nursing homes, four retirement communities, a surgery center, dozens of outpatient and medical office facilities, hospice services and one of the state’s largest home health care networks.
