Three celebrations to mark closing of Columbus Hospital

Within the next three months, three celebrations to mark the closing of Columbus Hospital, 2520 N. Lakeview Ave., will take place in the National Shrine of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. The entrance to the shrine is currently through the hospital’s south lobby.

At noon Sunday, Oct. 14, Bishop Edwin Conway, the Cardinal’s liason for Health and Hospital Affairs, will celebrate the Eucharist for all former and current employees, nurses, School of Nursing graduates, physicians, health care providers, and volunteers.

The Eucharist to honor Mother Cabrini on her feast day will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13. In 1946 she became the first U.S. citizen to be recognized as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. Four years later she was given the title “Patroness of All Immigrants.”

Cardinal Francis George will celebrate the Eucharist at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, to mark the official closing of Columbus Hospital and the temporary closing of the chapel.

Refreshments will be served at all the celebrations. Those planning to attend any of the events are urged to make reservations. Call the Pastoral Care Department at Columbus Hospital, (773) 388-7350. Voice mail messages may also be left at this number.
