Fall 'Clean & Green Day' Saturday, October 13

Chicago’s citywide fall “Clean & Green Day,” in which volunteers use city-loaned tools and supplies to sweep up litter and paint over graffiti, will be held Saturday, Oct. 13.

“People of all ages, even young children, make a positive contribution to their communities through this cooperative effort between local residents and city government,” said Mayor Richard M. Daley.

“Clean & Green,” coordinated by the Department of Streets and Sanitation, loans brooms, shovels and rakes—and provides free trash bags—to local groups for their volunteer clean-up efforts.

“As part of the ‘Clean & Green’ clean-up, free paint and scraping tools are offered through the ‘Give Graffiti the Brush’ program to block clubs and other community groups for covering graffiti,” according to Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Al Sanchez.

More than 3,500 gallons of paint are distributed each year. This program also includes the mayor’s street lamp beautification program, offering free green paint to volunteers for use on arterial street light poles.

For “Clean & Green” registration information, call City Hall’s 24-hour service request line at 311 by the end of the day on Wednesday, Oct. 10, or visit www.cityofchicago.org/StreetsAndSan/
