Adler School open house

The Adler School of Professional Psychology, 65 E. Wacker Pl., begins its 50th year of education and service with an open house on Wednesday, Oct. 24, beginning at 8 a.m. Admission is free and reservations are required due to limited space availability.

The Adler Open House is an all-day event designed to celebrate the opening of the school’s expanded clinic, allow professionals to network with individuals and organizations, and provide a better, more complete understanding of the many community services offered by the Adler School. The breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea sessions will each include guest speakers and a panel discussion led by faculty members of the Adler School. Guests are invited to attend any one or all three of the day’s scheduled program.

“We wanted to celebrate our 50th anniversary by presenting all that we do,” said Dr. Randall Thompson, president of the Adler School. “Adlerian psychology allows us to work with so many people and so many facets of society—from law enforcement and criminal justice to career and family counseling—and our expanded facilities give us greater resources with which to provide those services.” Appropriately, most of the scheduled guest speakers come from organizations involved in a partnership or joint venture with the Adler School. A two-hour lunch session is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. with guest speaker Bruce Blythe speaking about “Violence in the Workplace.” Blythe is a certified clinical psychologist and the president and CEO of Crisis Management, Inc. CMI provided counseling to businesses and employees affected by the recent World Trade Center tragedy.

At 3 p.m., Dr. Carolyn Gralewski and Dr. Tom Todd of the Adler School will examine Adler’s work with schools and families as part of a 90-minute afternoon tea, entitled “Children are the Future: Meeting the Needs of Diverse Families in the 21st Century.”

The Adler School of Professional Psychology was founded in 1952 by Rudolf Dreikurs, M.D., a student of the renowned psychiatrist Dr. Alfred Adler, who developed many psychological concepts which are now part of our culture, including overcompensation, birth order, and inferiority complex. The Adler School trains students to work as professional counselors and psychologists. The Adler Psychological Services Center offers assessment, counseling and intervention services to individuals, schools, businesses, industry and the community at large.
