Eye Opener...
The Opening Night Performance, Opening Night Gala and World Premiere of Brendan Healy’s "Relatively We..." should be a smashing success as the last show of the 2004-5 season for Open Eye Productions (OEP). All of this happens on Thursday, July 14, in the Athenaeum Theatre’s third floor Studio, 2936 N. Southport Ave., at 8 p.m. It's accessible by elevator.
Directed by OEP’s resident director, Daniel Shea, the story involves a retired beauty queen and a mid-level senator preparing for their pre-nuptial banquet which will be attended by a few of the bride’s ex-lovers, and her disapproving son. The dizzy night explodes as the caterers scurry about tending to last minute details and guests assembling. All are quick to partake in cocktailing, golfing, games of poker, baths, physics, lectures, history lessons, beach parties, and even nuclear explosions all in one night.
The full title is "Relatively We…or Loneliness Built the Bomb or How Einstein Wrote Hamlet or We’re All Going to Die Anyway so Why Can’t You Love Me Now and Why Can’t I Get a Home Loan or Find a Bagel that Costs what I Think it Should."
Performances will be held on Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., and on Sundays the matinee begins at 3 p.m. "Relatively We" continues through Saturday, Aug. 20.
For additional information about the play, to re-confirm show-times and to ask about a student or senior citizen discount (20 percent), phone or stop by the Athenaeum Theatre Box Office at 2936 N. Southport Ave. A ticket ranges in price from $15-$18 and $20 for the Opening Night. Payment can be made by phone at (312) 902-1500 (surcharges apply).
Only a short drive...
It’s not that far to drive to the Metropolis Theatre in Arlington Heights when the show that’s about to debut sounds as good and cute as can be. (Especially if you’re a fan of the late HBO show "Sex and the City.")
The show is "Girls Night Out," a comedy review from Second City Theatricals, and it debuts Friday, July 8, at the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, 111 W. Campbell St. in Arlington Heights.
The cast includes a troupe of Second City actresses and a few actors, and spoofs the "dating pool," "the cult of Oprah," "The Vagina Monologues," and more. But "Girls Night Out" isn’t just for the girls. The boys will laugh as well and might learn a few things about how women really think.
For more details on the comedy including show times, dates, directions, parking, and ticket prices ($22-$27), call the theater at (847) 577-2121. Tickets can be purchased at the box office as well, but save the gas money and buy over the phone or on the internet at www.metropolisarts.com. This show isn’t playing in the city yet, so I’ll see you in the ‘burbs.
Practice makes perfect…
Comb the hair, bathe, primp, and make sure all outfits are clean and ironed. Practice makes perfect so let the little darlings practice for perfect pitch so when they audition for one of two available roles in Disney’s "The Lion King," they’ll get one of the parts.
On Thursday, July 7, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., take the precious and precocious 9-12 year-old (must be under 58 inches---4 ft. 10 in. tall) to Lou Conte Dance Studio, 1147 W. Jackson (at Racine). That’s where the action is for the open-call singing auditions for the roles of the African lion cubs "Simba" and "Nala," in the Broadway and National Touring Companies of "The Lion King."
Children of all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to attend. Performers should be prepared to sing the last verse of "Just Can’t Wait To Be King." A parent or guardian must accompany each child at all times and be prepared to wait. Make sure you bring along some sheet music of a song that shows off the child’s voice and range in 16 bars marked off. They will be singing with piano accompaniment. The young hopefuls need to bring a picture or recent photo and performance resume. Callbacks will possibly be made on Saturday, July 9.
Adult singers are also sought for the show as well. The auditions will be held on Friday, July 8, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The roles are also for "Simba" and "Nala" and as above stated performers of all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to try out. Bring sheet music of a song showing off voice and range plus bring a performance resume and a recent photo.
Adult dancers will get their chance to audition on Sunday, July 10. Females will sign in for an audition between 9:30 and 10 a.m.; they begin at 10 a.m. Males need to sign in between 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., and auditions begin at 2 p.m.
All auditions will be held at Lou Conte Dance Studio, 1147 W. Jackson (at Racine). For additional information call (312) 850-9766 or the Disney Casting Hotline at (212) 827-5450, or visit www.hubbardstreetdance.com or www.disneyonbroadway.com.
Still interested but unable to attend the auditions? If so, send a picture and resume to: Binder Casting, Attn: The Lion King, 321 West 44th Street – Suite 606, New York, NY 10036.
So all you future stars remember--when you get out there: give it your all and "Break a Leg!"
More on the 'King'...
"The Lion King" continues at the Cadillac Palace Theatre, 151 W. Randolph St. (just East of Wells St.), through Sunday, Sept. 4, and is still a great show for adults and older kids too. I wouldn’t recommend bringing a baby or a young child as it might be difficult to sit through a show that has a 2 hour, 45 minute running time (including one 15-minute intermission). If you haven’t seen the show, try because it’s fantastic.
To purchase a ticket ($21- $85), visit the box offices of all Broadway in Chicago theaters, which include the Cadillac Palace Theatre, 151 W. Randolph St.. Ford Center, Oriental Theatre, 24 W. Randolph St., LaSalle Bank Theatre (formerly The Shubert), 18 W. Monroe St., and also The Auditorium Theatre, 50 W. Congress Pkwy. Tickets are also
