St. Vincent de Paul Center, a Daughters of Charity-sponsored social service agency, has honored four foundations for their continuing generous support of the Center's work.
Commemorative plaques have been placed inside the Center's building, at Halsted and Webster streets, out of gratitude to:
* The Hearst Foundation, Inc., New York, for its "support of the Center's programs that help Chicago's working poor achieve economic independence." Both the Hearst Foundation, Inc., and its sister foundation in California, the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, "assist institutions in providing opportunities to underserved and underrepresented populations."
* The Topfer Family Foundation, for grants in support of the Center's early-intervention social services for day care families. Located in Austin, Texas, the Topfer Family Foundation is "committed to helping people connect to the tools and resources needed to build self-sufficient and fulfilling lives."
* The Col. Stanley R. McNeil Foundation, Chicago. The McNeil Foundation's most recent grant was to the Center's Adopt-a-Family Fund, which helps working parents who face the most severe financial hardship pay their child-care expenses. Col. McNeil, an Army officer who served in both World Wars, died in 1986.
* The Dr. Scholl Foundation, Northbrook, in recognition of its consistent and generous support over the course of 14 consecutive years. The Dr. Scholl Foundation is "dedicated to providing financial assistance to organizations committed to improving our world" and to the idea that solutions to today's problems "still lie in the values of innovation, practicality, hard work, and compassion." The Foundation's most recent grant was in support of the Center's Adopt-a-Family Fund.
St. Vincent de Paul Center has been serving children of the working poor and their families, the at-risk elderly and the homeless since 1915. |
