Goodman high school apprentices to present free show

The Youth Drama Workshops, founded by the Goodman Theatre in 1995, provide participants with the unique opportunity to learn about the art of theater through hands-on experience. The workshops offer participants the chance to jump start their imaginations - strengthening their reading, writing and critical analysis skills, while developing new ones such as sketching, set/costume/sound designing, vocal and physical performance, character creation and ensemble building. The work in the classrooms is supplemented by field trips to various theaters across the city, which further broaden students’ understanding of theatre as a whole. The General Theatre Studies Program will culminate in a public presentation, showcasing the talent and creativity of the participants.
The General Theatre Studies Program, in its first year, includes 60 high school apprentice artists in a four-week workshop that meets each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Goodman Theatre. The workshop is a comprehensive exploration of all aspects of theater production, incorporating acting, directing, design, playwriting, ensemble building and text studies. Participants will work with Goodman Artists to delve into the art of taking a play from the page to the stage, as well as seeing Goodman productions, and having the opportunity to stretch their own creative wings. The workshop is designed to be an introduction to the theater arts.
The General Theatre Studies Summer Workshop is headed by Program Director Chuck Smith, led by Lead Program Artist Reginald Lawrence, and Lead Teaching Artists Kevin Douglas and Larry Nance. The apprentice artists will present their work on Friday, July 29, at 6 p.m. at the Goodman Theatre, located at 170 N. Dearborn St. It is free and open to the public.
