Police Department reinstates Cadet Program

The Police Cadet Program is open to high school graduates between the age of 17 and 21 who are enrolled in a two-year or four-year college or university.
Under the pilot program, two cadets per district will be paid $9 per hour to work 20 hours a week. They will assist police officers with clerical duties, process case reports, create spreadsheets and databases and attend CAPS meetings and other outreach events.
"I think this is an excellent recruiting tool that has the potential to attract some highly motivated young men and women into the ranks of the Police Department," Mayor Richard M. Daley said. "The cadets will be under no obligation to become Chicago Police Officers, though we obviously hope some of them will. Even if they don’t join the department, they will have had a great learning experience".
Applications and instructions for applying for the Police Cadet program are available by going to the Chicago Police Department Web site: www.cityofchicago.org/CAPS, and scrolling to "employment opportunities."
