Landlord training at Police Department reduces crime
The Department of Buildings and the Chicago Police Department offer a Landlord Training Program, to help ensure that neighborhoods are safe and well-maintained.
Started in 1997, the Landlord Training Program is designed to teach building owners, landlords, building managers and residents how to:
* keep criminal activity out of their buildings
* practice preventive building and crime maintenance
* screen tenants properly
* become a part of CAPS (Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy) partnership by working with the Police and Buildings Department to report illegal activity in buildings
* recognize dishonest tenants, and
* manage and maintain buildings that are free of building code violations and illegal activity.
The program also provides critical information on crisis resolution, the eviction process, contract clauses and leases, warning signs of illegal activity, and City services.
The City's Landlord and Tenant Ordinance holds landlords accountable for criminal activity that occurs in the buildings over an extended period of time. If a landlord permits or encourages illegal activity in their property, he can be fined up to $500 a day.
The free program lasts approximately three hours. The following sessions will be offered at the 19th District Police Station Auditorium, 2452 W. Belmont Ave., with a 6 p.m. registration and a 6:30 p.m. class: Aug. 10, Sept. 13, Oct. 11, Nov. 9, and Dec. 7. For more information, call (312) 744-3430, or visit
