Relief from heat

Children listen attentively to canoeing instruction from a Friends of the Chicago River instructor. More than 70 family members turned out to River Park on Saturday, July 23, for river canoe trips.

Local families enjoyed temporary relief from the scorching summer heat on Saturday, July 23, as they embarked on refreshing canoe adventures down the Chicago River. More than 70 people escaped the humid conditions and navigated the Chicago River for an afternoon showcase of splashing and environmental education.
Families launched their journeys at River Park, 5100 N. Francisco Ave., where they were treated to scenic views of the river and the surrounding plants and wildlife. All safety equipment, canoes, paddles and instructions were provided by the Friends of the Chicago River. The event was open to all families and their children ages six and older.
The event fee was kept at $10 per family because of the continued sponsorship provided by Exelon and ComEd as part of their partnership with the Chicago Park District. Through the partnership, children and their families can camp out in the city's parks, canoe through the Chicago River, meet live fruit bats, save seeds from prairie plants, tell stories by a campfire, prowl for owls, build bird houses and fly Japanese kites — all based out of four local parks.
The "Nature Oasis" programs currently are based out of Gompers, Humboldt, Jackson and Washington parks. For more information, please contact the Chicago Park District at (312) 742-PLAY, or visit www.chicagoparkdistrict.com.
