Armed robbery
A 28-year-old man was robbed and stabbed around 1 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, on the sidewalk of the 5000 block of N. Clark St. Three offenders approached him from behind, stopped him and surrounded him. One demanded money; when the victim refused, he struck him on the face knocking him to the ground. One of the offenders took a $20 bill from the victim’s pocket, and then the three fled. Dazed, the victim stood up and realized his left wrist was bleeding from a one-inch cut. The victim went to Weiss Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Caught
Officers on routine patrol at Lawrence Ave. and Clark St. at 8:40 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, observed a man trying a car door. They set up surveillance of the subject, with one officer following on foot. The offender walked along the sidewalk and tried multiple car doors, then turned east on Winona St. and tried several more. He came to a ’99 Jeep Wrangler, opened the passenger door, stepped inside and reached into the glove box, removing objects. As the watching officer approached, a woman began yelling from a balcony, “What are you doing to my car?” The subject closed the door and began walking away.
The officer placed him in custody. The woman related that she did not know the offender and had not given him permission to enter her vehicle or remove items. The man was found to be in possession of a black case for sunglasses and a hands-free cellphone mic/earbud, which the victim positively identified as
her property.
When asked why he was trying all those car doors, the subject said, “I was looking for money to get some more beer.” Asked what he was planning to do with the stuff he took, he said he was going to sell it on the street.
Burglary
Residents of an apartment in the 5400 block of N. Paulina St. came home Thursday, July 21, to find the front door unlocked and the apartment ransacked. The victims had left the kitchen window open 4” but locked. The offender broke the window latches and came in. Taken were a man’s watch, two DVD players with 30 DVDs, two digital cameras, one pair of shoes, a sport radio, an electric razor, a laundry basket and $30 in change.
Arrested for battery
While parking his car in the 4800 block of N. Hermitage Ave. at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, a male teacher got into a verbal altercation with the occupants of another car. One occupant swore at him. The teacher began walking away from the car and this same offender picked up a brick and threatened to bash in his head with it. The offender then threw the brick, striking the victim in the leg.
When the victim then announced he had called police, the offender fled. Police located him and the victim made a positive identification. He was transported to District 20 for processing.
Theft
Vandals stripped the four hubcaps ($240) from a ’98 Buick parked in the 5700 block of N. Western Ave. on Wednesday, July 20. They also damaged the right side mirror and scratched the entire body with a sharp object.
Retail theft
A shoplifter was apprehended in Walgreens, 5625 N. Ridge Ave., at 5:35 p.m. Thursday, July 21. A store employee observed the man entering the store, then selecting two packages of batteries, opening the packages and placing the batteries loose in his front pockets, discarding the wrap on a counter. The offender then selected two bottles of Crest and a toothbrush, placing those in front and rear pockets. He proceeded to the front of the store and passed all points of sale, making no effort to pay for the items valued at $29.02.
Backpacks, deodorant
Two shoplifters entered Walgreens, 5625 N. Ridge Ave., at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, July 20. Each took a backpack from a shelf, then walked through the store gathering numerous deodorant sticks into the backpacks. They fled with the stolen goods.
Vehicle theft
A ’96 Honda Accord, parked in the 5200 block of N. Winchester Ave., was stolen sometime during the night of July 20-21. The dark green four-door car had the IL license plate of 561 5257.
Early morning robbery
At 3:30 a.m. Friday, July 29, an offender walked up to the drive-through window at McDonald’s, 5130 N. Sheridan Rd. He reached through the window, pushed the cashier away, and said, “Give me the money. Give me the money.” He reached into the cash drawer and grabbed an unknown amount of money, then fled.
Stolen cash
A burglar struck an apartment in the 1700 block of W. Gregory St. between 2 p.m. Thursday, July 28, and 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 29. He broke the back door glass to gain entry, then took about $600 in $20 bills. An evidence technician
was ordered.
Resourceful burglar
A burglar may have used a white mesh hamper with a few articles of dirty clothing in it as a container to haul away electronics, in a crime that occurred in the early hours of Monday, July 25, in the 5800 block of N. Kenmore Ave. The resident found her front door pried open. Missing besides the hamper were a Dell computer, a printer, a speaker, a keyboard and a scanner.
Loud noise ignored
In the 2400 block of W. Bryn Mawr Ave. a neighbor heard a loud noise at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, July 28 — but did not investigate. The resident returned to his apartment half an hour later to discover his laptop, Kodak camera, and jug of coins missing. Also taken was a maroon cooler.
Deft thief
Thirty-five people entered Calo’s Restaurant, 5343 N. Clark St., for a wedding rehearsal dinner at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 28. An unknown woman entered at the same time and bumped into a member of the party, the victim. This victim then placed her purse on a chair as she moved about to get everyone situated. When she returned to the chair, the purse was gone and so was the woman. The suspect was described as olive-skinned, mid-30s, 5’3”, 135 lb., wearing all black.
In the purse were $100 cash, four silver necklaces, four silver earrings, one black onyx necklace, 10 silver rings, a driver's license, IDs, a checkbook, credit cards, and a cell phone.
Stolen vehicle
A 2001 Lexus was stolen from the 5400 block of N. Western Ave. The golden four-door car had the IL license plate 571 3770. It disappeared sometime July 24-27.
Tools, electronics
Someone burglarized an apartment in the 2300 block of W. Ardmore Ave. on Thursday, July 28. The resident returned to find his clothing and papers scattered all over the floor. Missing were 100 DVDs, a cordless drill, a jig saw, a laptop and two watches.
Pick-pocket
A 78-year-old man fell victim to a pick-pocket as he stood on the CTA platform at 1118 W. Argyle St. The thief snatched the wallet from the man's back pocket and then fled down the stairs and out of the station. The wallet contained a CTA pass. The crime occurred at 8:05 p.m. Wednesday, July 20. |
