City Beat

Up, up and away
Ald. Tom Tunney has proposed an increase in height, up to 69', for rooftop clubs overseeing Wrigley Field, to enable them to see over the soon-to-be expanded bleacher sections. The current limit is 61'. The proposal also calls for the rooftop clubs to have both front and rear exits to enhance safety. In addition, rooftop owners would help pay for streetscaping on both Sheffield and Waveland avenues, with the Chicago Cubs also contributing money to this cause. Five rooftop clubs are expected to build up to the limit.

City proposes redevelopment of Viceroy Hotel for SRO
Mayor Richard M. Daley has introduced an ordinance into the Chicago City Council to transform the Viceroy Hotel from a transient hotel into a City-sponsored, licensed, single room occupancy (SRO) supportive housing development.
The plan seeks authority for the Department of Planning and Development to acquire the six-story building located at 1519 W. Warren Blvd. Redevelopment of the almost 51,000 square foot hotel, with its 163 rooms and 60 surface parking spaces, will provide greater residential options for low-income individuals by making good use of existing and underutilized housing stock.
Supportive housing developments work toward the Mayor's 10-year Plan to End Homelessness in Chicago. They also blend on-site supportive assistance services such as job training, employment services, money-management assistance, and substance abuse programs with permanent housing in an effort to provide opportunities for positive lifestyle changes.
