SSP hosts monologue matchup competition

‘Show Your Stuff’
The Saint Sebastian Players (SSP) are inviting every Chicago-area actor to “show your stuff” by competing in the ninth annual Monologue Matchup Competition. A fund-raiser for SSP, the event takes place Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. at the Saint Sebastian Players Theatre at St. Bonaventure, 1625 W. Diversey Ave.

Each actor participating in the monologue matchup will perform a two-minute monologue for a distinguished group of judges, including, schedules permitting, returning judges Chuck Smith/Goodman and Columbia College, John Ragir/Live Bait, Mark Pence/Alphabet Soup, Jennifer Byers/Ulysses and Chuck Zis/SSP, plus representatives from Apple Tree, Victory Gardens, Red Hen Productions, Pegasus, Healthworks, Bailiwick, Child’s Play Touring Co. and Stage Left. After viewing all of the participants, the judges will select a group of finalists, each of who will perform a second two-minute monologue. From this group, the judges will award prizes of cash, donated and discounted acting classes and theater tickets. Those who come just to watch the competition will select their “people’s choice” winner as well.

To participate in the monologue matchup, actors must call SSP at (773) 404-7922 to make a reservation for the limited number of available spaces. The fee to participate, which includes an opportunity to observe the other competitors, is $8. The fee for audience members is $8. There will be a post-competition reception at the theater, giving actors, audience and judges the opportunity to meet and mingle.

Prize donors to date include Act One Studio, Actors Workshop, Audition Studio, Lookingglass Theatre and Second City.
