The internationally renowned architect Renzo Piano will give an illustrated presentation on his work—including his design for a new Art Institute of Chicago building—on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 6 p.m., in the Art Institute’s Rubloff Auditorium. In his lecture, entitled “The Architecture of Renzo Piano Building Workshop,” Piano will discuss and show some of the highlights of his 30-year career, and explore the development of his concept for the Art Institute’s new addition (scheduled for completion in 2005/6). The event is sponsored jointly by the Architecture and Design (A&D) Society and the Sustaining Fellows of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Admission is for $15 for non-members. Reservations should be made in advance by contacting the A&D Society at (312) 443-4751 or via e-mail at archsoc@artic.edu. For information about this event or for membership information, visit the A&D Society Web site at www.archdesignsociety.org.
In 1999, the Art Institute of Chicago selected Renzo Piano to develop a comprehensive site development plan for its Grant Park campus. Two years later, in spring of 2001, Piano unveiled his preliminary concept for an approximately 300,000 square-foot addition to the museum, which would include galleries, educational spaces, and other functions in a state-of-the-art facility. Piano’s Oct. 24 presentation will explore in detail the development of his concept for this new building.
