European Repertory 10th season with 'The Tempest'

On Monday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m. European Repertory Company (ERC) opens its 10th season with William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” at the Viaduct Theater main stage, 3111 N. Western Ave. On the same day in 1992, ERC opened its inaugural production of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” in the basement theater of Cafe Voltaire.

“The Tempest” has long dazzled readers and audiences with its intricate blend of magic, music, humor, intrigue and tenderness. It charmed Jacobean audiences, played to packed houses from the Restoration through the 18th century, emerged as a focal point in 19th century European debates about the nature of humanity, and served disparate symbolic roles in the 20th century writings on western imperialism and its demise. “The Tempest” has been a play for all eras, all continents and many ideologies.

This production of “The Tempest” will be staged with a minimalist approach to allow the focus to remain on Shakespeare’s rich text and the essential nature of humanity.

Previews will be Friday, Oct. 19, Saturday, Oct. 20, both at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 21, at 3 p.m. Opening night is Monday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m. Performances run Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. through Sunday, Dec. 2. Ticket prices are $18 for Thursday evenings and $22 for Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Senior and student tickets are $15 and $19, respectively.
