Goodman Theatre establishes family theater series

In December, the Goodman Theatre will inaugurate the Family Theater Series, a new program designed to introduce young people to live performance in a playful and child-friendly way. The creation of the Goodman’s Family Theater Series is made possible by and will continue to be supported in part by a $1 million endowment gift to the Campaign for the New Goodman Theatre from Goodman Board Chairman Deborah A. Bricker and her daughter, Kelly A. Rosen. “My daughter Kelly and I have been enjoying performances for young people at area theaters for years. Now at its expanded site on N. Dearborn St., the Goodman has the ability to increase the scope of its stellar educational programs. Kelly and I are proud to have our campaign endowment gift used to create and support the new Family Theater Series,” Bricker said.

The Goodman’s Family Theater Series will begin on Dec. 8, with Child’s Play Touring Theatre’s production of “The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t,” a collection of colorful stories and songs about narrowly averted holiday disasters, composed by children and performed by Child’s Play professionals. Performances will be held on Saturdays (Dec. 8, 15, 22) at 10 a.m. and noon and Sundays (Dec. 9, 16, 23) at noon only in the Goodman’s Owen Bruner Goodman Theatre. Tickets for “The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t” are priced at $6 for the upper mezzanine, $10 for the lower mezzanine, and $14 for the main floor. Seating is general admission within levels. Tickets will go on sale Oct. 22. Future programs in the Goodman’s Family Theater Series will be announced shortly.

The mission of Child’s Play Touring Theatre is to share, encourage, and validate the creative writing of children by presenting original works of theater, music and dance adapted from stories and poems written by children of all ages, from kindergarten through eighth grade. In its 21-year-old history, Child’s Play has toured to 35 states and reached an audience of approximately 3.5 million people.

The Goodman’s Family Theater Series represents another strong component of the Goodman’s internationally acclaimed educational and community programs, first among them the free Student Subscription Series, celebrating its 16th year this season. The Goodman’s free Student Subscription Series provides 1700 students and 35 teachers from Chicago public high schools each year with an in-depth, season-long immersion in the artistic life of a professional theater company.
