First MayaNights Program at Saint Luke

Dr. Susana Martinez, Assistant Professor of Spanish at DePaul University, will inaugurate the MayaNights program series with "Guatemala and the Maya: A Brief Introduction‚" on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. in the Doederlein Gallery of Saint Luke Church, 1500 W. Belmont Ave. MayaNights is a series of Thursday evening programs presented to acquaint the Chicago community with the history and social issues of Guatemalan Mayan culture.
The programs are offered in conjunction with the exhibition, running Oct. 20 - Dec. 1, of "Mayan Procession‚" a series of life-size paintings showing the Highland Maya of Guatemala in native dress by Chicago artist Winifred Godfrey. Also on display will be Mayan textiles and costumes from the collection of William Goldman. Textiles and beadwork from the Highlands of Guatemala will be available for purchase through MayaWorks, a Chicago based Fair Trade non-profit organization that supports the economic development of Maya artisans by marketing their hand work.
