Fresh supplies for Goudy School

The Chicago Bar Association's (CBA) Young Lawyer's Section (YLS) hosted a second successful school supply drive for William C. Goudy Elementary School, 5120 N. Winthrop Ave., which the CBA adopted in 2003. The YLS provided the entire 5th grade of approximately 100 students with everything they need for the school year including notebooks, pencils and crayons, glue sticks, protractors and red pens. Pictured above on Tuesday, Sept. 6, the first day of school, the CBA-YLS Chair Carolyn Amadon hands out bags full of school supplies to each 5th grade student.

Opening day of school at Nettelhorst

Sometimes it's just hard to let go on that first day of school. Tuesday, Sept. 6, was an exciting opening day at Nettelhorst School, 3252 N. Broadway. For the third year in a row, Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) rang the opening day bell to welcome students and parents to school. Then the Community Kitchen filled to capacity for the third annual Butterfly Breakfast, where moms and dads, many with toddlers in tow, were busy eating, chatting with neighbors and signing up to volunteer for a multitude of Nettelhorst Parents' Co-op activities. Caribou Coffee donated muffins, pastries and coffee, while Ann Sathers sent over sweet rolls. Nettelhorst now boasts four full pre-kindergarten classes, three kindergartens, two first grades, and two second grades, as well as 30 children each in 7th and 8th grades. New this year are a full-time art teacher, a music teacher and a gym teacher. Nettelhorst is a CPS Magnet Cluster School, a CPS Community School and an International Scholars Program site.

Loading hurricane supplies

It took three days and many Catholic Charities trucks to load the supplies destined for the victims of Katrina. Once St. Gregory High School circulated the request, rooms quickly began to fill. It became a community effort and in less than a week three classrooms were filled wall to wall! In addition to the students, faculty, family and friends of St. Gregory the Great High School. Other contributors of note were: the Parishioners of St. Gregory, St. Ita and St. Gertrude; North Side Catholic Academy; DePaul University; Mercy Home for Boys and Girls; Smothers Realty in LaGrange; and the Kazma Family Foundation.

Discover private schools at Independent Schools Fair
The Independent Schools Fair, an event to introduce families to the programs of top schools on the North Side, in the north suburbs, and elsewhere in the Chicago area, will be Sunday, Oct. 23, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Chicago Historical Society Museum, Clark St. and North Ave.
The Independent Schools Fair is free and open to the public. Admission representatives will be available to discuss opportunities at the schools.
Families visiting the Fair will also be able to visit the museum for free. There will be special entertainment for children.
"This Fair is a wonderful opportunity for families to become acquainted with individual independent schools, to learn more about the rich variety of programs they offer," said Carol Parham, Admissions Director of Chicago's Ancona School and coordinator of the Fair. The Fair, which is being held for the 15th year, has become a popular event for families looking for excellent schools for their children.
"Some independent schools use traditional, classical curricula, some are specialized for gifted students or those interested in the arts, and others offer nontraditional programs. By visiting with individual admissions directors, parents can identify the schools that are best for their children," Parham added.
Although the schools each offer a different program, they all provide a high degree of individual attention for students and share with parents high expectations for student achievement, she said.
These North Side schools will be represented at the Fair: Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School, Catherine Cook School, Chicago Academy for the Arts, Chicago Waldorf School, Francis W. Parker School, Latin School, Lycée Français de Chicago, North Park Elementary School, and Sacred Heart Academy for Girls/Hardey Prep for Boys.
North suburban schools will include Countryside Montessori School, Northbrook; North Shore Country Day School, Winnetka; Quest Academy, Palatine; Roycemore School, Evanston; and Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart, Lake Forest.
These boarding schools also will be represented: Conserve School, Land O' Lakes, Wisconsin; Fox River Country Day School, Elgin; Howe Military Academy, Howe, Indiana; La Lumiere School, La Porte, Indiana; St. John's Military Academy, Delafield, Wisconsin; and Wayland Academy, Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.
Other schools represented at the Fair will be Ancona School, Morgan Park Academy, and University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, all in Chicago, as well as Avery Coonley School in Downers Grove.
The Independent Schools Fair is organized by the Lake Michigan Association of Independent Schools, which represents schools in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana. For more information, call (773) 924-2456 or visit www.independentschools.net.

St. Gregory High School puts 'fun' in 'fundraiser'
Can you "spare" some time for fun? St. Gregory High School has planned a fundraiser, in memory of Marty Manning, Class of 1970, at a bowling alley. The Marty Manning Candlelight Bowl will be held at Habetler Bowl, 5250 N. Northwest Hwy., on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. The cost is $30 per person, or $55 per couple, which includes three games, bowling shoes, and pizza.
Get away from the TV and the turmoil! The grass doesn't need cutting anymore and the leaves look great right where they are just in time for Halloween. Dust off your old bowling shirts and come out for an afternoon of good old-fashioned family fun. Friends, family, alumni, parishioners and neighbors — you are all invited! Join the good time and help to raise funds for students in need of financial assistance. For tickets, stop in the school office or call (773) 907-2114 by Oct. 14.
