Despite overwhelming evidence, a man denied being the burglar in an incident that occurred at GNS Foods, 4092 W. Broadway, between 2 and 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20. Police responded to a call that a plate glass window had been broken with a large rock. The owner arrived to open the store and reported that lottery tickets, hard liquor, Newport cigarettes, and several cases of Corona beer were missing. The burglar had left a trail of blood on the broken glass. Lottery tickets smeared with blood were strewn on the floor.
As an evidence technician was assigned to take prints and photos, another call summoned police to check out a suspicious person who had entered a building in the 900 block of W. Belle Plaine Ave. — a person who was sitting next to two cases of Corona beer. The subject had a black backpack found to contain numerous cans of Miller Lite, two pints of liquor, some Newport cigarettes and an ID. The subject acknowledged that he did not live in the building. He said he was “watching” the beer for a friend.
The subject finally related that “the other guy” broke the glass, entered the store and took items. He described “the other guy” as a fat black male, 40-45, with braids, accompanied by a white female. He also related that there was a third case of beer “stashed” a block away; this was subsequently recovered by police and found to have a blood smear.
Police reviewed a video surveillance tape of the crime scene. It revealed a burglar wearing clothes identical to those of the subject; the burglar was standing behind the counter of the closed store taking items.
The subject admitted knowing the items were stolen but still denied being the burglar, despite being informed of all the facts known to the police — and despite the discovery by police of a fresh cut on his hand.
Finally, the subject admitted entering and stealing. |
