Local bridges, streetscapes funded

The City’s $1.2 billion Capital Improvement Program for 2005 includes money for construction at O’Hare and Midway airports and other transportation projects, as well as a $150 million general obligation bond program. Projects of special interest to the North Side include reconstruction of the North Avenue bridge over the Chicago River; median work on Peterson Ave. from Western to Ravenswood avenues; and streetscape projects on Broadway, from Belmont Ave. to Addison St.; on Lawrence Ave. from Keeler to Elston avenues; on Clark St. from St. James Place to Diversey Pkwy.; on Fullerton Ave. from Kimball to Sacramento avenues; and on Clark St. from Lincoln Park to Belden Ave.
Under the Capital Improvement Program, the City intends to install 40 miles of new water mains; reconstruct more than eight miles of sewers and line and rehabilitate an additional five miles; resurface more than 27 miles of arterial streets, 86 alleys, and more than 420 blocks of local streets; replace 330 blocks of sidewalks; install more than 100 blocks of new residential street lighting; construct 10 alleys and 17 blocks of former WPA streets; and install new or upgraded traffic signals at 28 intersections.

Some like it hot

With colder temperatures approaching, the Department of Buildings is reminding landlords about their responsibility to properly heat their building in compliance with the City of Chicago’s minimum heating requirements. Chicago’s Heat Ordinance requires that from Sept. 15 to June 1, rental units must be supplied with heat in order to achieve the following minimum temperature: 68 degrees from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., 66 degrees from 10:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Tenants who believe their landlords are not meeting minimum heating standards should immediately call the City’s 311 Call Center.
