Michael Lemon rides the 26-mile lakefront bike path—rain or shine—almost every day. On a recent morning, Lemon biked his usual course. What he didn't expect was a detour to Saint Joseph Hospital.
When Lemon reached Belmont Harbor that morning, he collided with another bike rider. He fell, cutting and scraping his arms and chest. He was bleeding from his injuries. Lemon, realizing he needed emergency care, came to the Saint Joseph Hospital Emergency Department.
"When I arrived, the staff greeted me promptly and was interested in helping me feel better. I didn't even have to register until I was comfortably settled," says Lemon. "I really appreciated seeing the doctor and receiving care before completing registration forms."
Lemon was triaged by Ian Alave, R.N., Emergency Department, and was promptly seen by the attending physician. "I saw the nurse first and saw the doctor within minutes of my arrival," says Lemon.
Emergency Medicine physician James Chadd, M.D., recommended that Lemon undergo an X-ray of his left arm and chest. Luckily, the X-rays revealed he had no broken bones and his cuts did not require stitches. "Although my injuries only required bandages and antibiotic cream, I appreciated that Dr. Chadd prescribed treatment that included a combination of ibuprofen, ice and rest," says Lemon.
He was also thankful for the quick response of the Emergency Room staff. He only spent about one hour at Saint Joseph Hospital. "I was amazed at the efficiency of the Emergency Department staff. I was in and out of the hospital...Hopefully, I will not require emergency care any time soon, but I know where to turn if I do." |
