Local couple's photo of cat rescue wins recognition in national contest

Edie the acro-cat

Kathleen Parent and Derek Potts were at the el station when a kitten walked up on the stairway, meowed, and rolled over to be petted. The kitten desperately needed a home, so Kathleen and Derek took her home and named her Edie — after the 1960s waif model Edie Sedwick and because she was found at the Sedgwick el station. A photo of Edie, along with her rescue story, will be in the fall issue of Animal Times. Kathleen and Derek are one of 10 winners chosen from more than 150 entries nationwide.
"Edie is our 'acro-cat,' always seeing how high she can climb, jump, and fly," wrote Kathleen. "So far, she has always landed on her feet!"
The contest is intended to inspire others to rescue animals in need and to encourage everyone to take action when they see an animal in distress. Whether it's a stray or abandoned cat or dog, an animal left over from an ill-conceived classroom project, or an injured bird or squirrel, these animals will suffer and often die without help. Besides adopting a pet, people can take animals to a local animal shelter or seek the advice of a qualified wildlife rehabilitator in the case of injured or sick wildlife.
Animal Times, which features 10 heartwarming photos of rescued animals and tips for helping animals in need, is available by calling (757) 622-7382.
