The Notebaert Nature Museum's polar bear, "Big Paw," took his first walk in years Oct. 8. Staff relocated the massive, 8-foot 4-inch, real specimen from its traditional post atop an upper ledge in the Museum's front lobby to a second-floor exhibit area. The Museum, at 2430 N. Cannon Dr., recently conserved Big Paw, preparing him for the move. With a bear of an effort, four people lowered him from the ledge and maneuvered him up the stairs. The mounted polar bear was contributed to the Museum's collections more than 20 years ago.
Big Paw traveled to the "Climate Chaos" exhibit because he represents how some animals live in habitats threatened by global warming. "Climate Chaos" is the U.S. premiere of a special exhibition that presents a fun and accessible approach to the important issue of climate change.
